..... Actually one of the IT employees in my company wanted to quit so management ofer her a higher salary and some more benefits. One of the benefit was a phone so she said she wanted the best one. And they gave her P990:)
I always think threating my boss to leave the company hoping that he will raise my salary. But I have not dared yet as I have not found a better job so far. However, he paid for my P990i. May be this is the reason I am still in this company....

and XP should have been the OS that MS should have released to begin with not 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, 3.1, 3.11, 95, 98, 98SE, etc...you get the picture.
I only blame myself for not waiting for a more stable phone.

The P700i is really the phone that both the P990 and M600 should have been when they were released. The M600 always had a superior form factor (the old P series flip arrangement should have been retired with the P910, it's just not relevant to UIQ3) but the P990's extra features (camera, wifi) always ensured it was still considered the flagship. Now that you've got all that combined with the M series keypad, this is really all the phone anyone could ask for. I'll definitely be upgrading to it from my current M600, and yes - I do feel a little sorry for anyone who's been caught out recently by the P990. I think the M600 and now P700 are the true successors to the old P series crown worn by the P800, 900, and 910, and I've a feeling the P990 is going to age very badly, very quickly as the one that just never quite cut the mustard.
The P700 without the flip cannot really be a replacement for the P990.
It is more of an upgrade for the M600. They have the same look with the M600 + camera and wifi I think.
The flip is what actually makes the P-Series unique from other PDA Phones out on the market. I think it is the most ingenious way of making a PDA Phone.
PDA + Phone right?
Flip closed = Phone
Flip Open = PDA + Phone =)
The P series is the only PDA Phone I know of that you can use with just one hand. Other PDA Phones are difficult to use with one hand, even if it is just a phone function you are accessing. One example of this is the O2 xdaIIs. So in my opinion the flip should stay.

But the P700 is a P series phone, and lacks the defining characteristic of the "M" series - the absence of a camera for the benefit of business users.
The flip is what actually makes the P-Series unique from other PDA Phones out on the market.
But the P series can't be defined by the flip if it now includes the P700, a phone without a flip, right? By giving it a P series designation, SE are stating as clearly as they can that the "P" does
not go hand in hand with a flip design anymore.

I think it was an ingeniuous way of making a PDA phone five years ago, when the P800 first came out. In UIQ 2 it made perfect sense to do it that way, and it worked well - but times have changed. The competition has gotten tougher, squeezing more power into smaller devices. At the same time, UIQ has developed greatly as an interface, allowing much easier access to regular phone functionality without the need for a "flip closed" mode.

I'm guessing you haven't used one so you don't understand, but with UIQ3 combined with the M600/P700 form factor, that arrangement just isn't necessary anymore. If I want my M600 to be "just a phone" then it's just a phone; I can dial numbers with the keypad, quickly navigate the menus with the jog dial, tap out a message, whatever. If I want "PDA + Phone" then I can get the stylus out and immediately start doing more complex things. There's no need for any flip to be open or closed, because everything is already there - qwerty and conventional phone keypad, all at once, navigating a UI that's designed to operate as both phone and PDA simultaneously.
On the P990 SE artificially created a need for the flip, by creating unnecessary "flip closed" versions of some apps and fudging the "flip open" versions to make them fiddlier, but the M600 is easily navigable in permanent "flip open" mode, whatever you're trying to do.
The P series is the only PDA Phone I know of that you can use with just one hand. Other PDA Phones are difficult to use with one hand, even if it is just a phone function you are accessing. One example of this is the O2 xdaIIs. So in my opinion the flip should stay.
Again, try a M600 - you don't even need a spare hand for the flip.

Yes you're right, I haven't tried the M600 yet. But the P990 is still easier to use compared to non SE PDA Phones. So I guess the P990 still kicks ass when compared to non SE PDA Phones. But against the M600? well i'll just take your word for it. You have more experience with the product.

both phones are very average and not very cutting edge or revolutionary and they look cheap so get neither.

The M600 & P700 still lack the joypad and softkeys so it will never be as easy to use as the P990 in flip closed mode, i really like how easy it is to use the P990 for simple task's with the flip closed and then open it up to use the qwerty whilst emailing or browsing the internet.
I also think that bringing back the 5 way jogdial would make these phones a lot easier to operate!
