this is exactly what I mean! Everyone thinks because it happens to them it must happen to everyone, but I've helped a lot of people with a lot of phones and joystick problems don't happen for everyone. And for people who do have joystick problems it generally doesn't matter what brand of phone, so from my experience faulty joysticks is not an "SE thing" as many try and make out.
The biggest factors in early joystick failure in my observation are heavy handed use, carried in pockets or handbags without a cover, or excessive use, or a combination of those factors.
If you are soft handed then maybe one of those other factors apply, or possible you got a lemon joystick (it does happen)

doesn't use some more heavy-duty types of joysticks that last longer, but it's possibly a question of cost and/or size. The calculated lifetime for the whole phone nowadays is about 3 years, and the joystick should last that long at least.
I think that
could change the design so that the joystick was easier to replace, for example, using a contact and cable instead of soldering the joystick to the circuit board. One idea would be to have a removable panel which either can contain a joystick or a d-pad, and which the owner can replace himself.

this is a good idea, though a soldered on joystick is a lot toughter ultimately. I'm not too hard on SE over joysticks because I know most joystick using brands (not just SE) have the same problems with joystick reliability consistancy, and if there is atleast some decent handsets in both joy and dpad guise, then users have a choice.

i had a t610,k300,k700 and now k750 and never have problem with the joysticks. i prefer joysticsk is much faster.

I never had problems with the joysticks on my T610 and K700. The first time I did have one was with the W700, when the joystick refused to sense a downward motion. It seems to have sorted itself out pretty quickly though, it's working perfectly now.
Joysticks are preferable to a d-pad IMO. My favourite was the one on the K700, it felt very sturdy, although the one on the W700 felt more comfortable.

It's definitely odd. I know at least one person who kills joysticks consistantly. I think he just uses too much pressure, rather than just excess use. He pushes them really hard. He's like that with everything. He doesn't quite appreciate his own strength. He breaks all sorts of things, and some people are just like that.
So I think there are a variety of reasons that joysticks die, but you and I and others don't fall into those groups so we don't have problems with joysticks.

because then they will piss off the users who prefer joysticks. No one has durability problems with dpad sure, but they seriously irritate me and I hate using them.
Durability isn't the only factor people consider - usability is infact more important - especially for those of us who don't have problems with joysticks. Why should we lose out just because you have problems with joysticks? It's not as if there are no SE phones with dpads so what's your problem with SE maintaining a line in joystick equiped phones as well?
The anti-joystick brigade really give me the sh*ts....
