Mobile phones have two separate parts: phone and organizer. These modules can be stopped separately. Switching off the phone module saves battery and eliminates "radiation". On a smartphone this state is called flight mode, while on ordinary phones it is called "phone is off". In this state of a smartphone all organizer functions, including alarm, are working, while on a plain phone nothing works except the alarm. You can turn off the residual organizer functions on a smartphone by using the main switch, in which case the device is truly off, meaning no residual activity at all, no alarm, no surprises, no nothing. On ordinary phones you can achieve the same only by taking out the battery.
So, it is actually a matter of concept that's worth considering.

Lisa has now explained why these things happen but believe me, these "important issues" will fade very quickly as you get used to the phone. When I first got my M600 when it was released I thought this was a terrible thing but now I've forgotten all about it and just work around it. The alarm is still there, you just have to get used to how to use it i.e. put it in flight mode.

@Lisa@CPS
Sorry to correct you Lisa but you should of said on an SE Smart phone this state is called flight mode, as on a Nokia Smart phone it is called Offline.

what i dont like is the fact that the p1i wont play a sound if the whole phone is muted. that s a bit dangerous because i often forget to switch of the mute setting.
On many Nokia phones, you can set a time limit for the mute, i.e. it goes off silent mode after a specified time. This is perfect for a meeting or a visit to the cinema, for example, and you don't have to remember to un-mute the phone afterwards. this is a fairly simple-to-implement feature, so why can't SonyEricsson do that?
Edit:
I once had an Ericsson SH888. On that phone, the alarm still worked when the phone was turned off. You could not turn the alarm off unless you turned the phone on and entered the correct PIN code. Otherwise, it only went to snooze mode. That really made you awaken by the alarm though...

Quite annoying problem: Alarm does not ring.
Since recently, daily alarm (these 3 alarms on time screen) is not triggered.
I own p1i since august, it always worked OK. During last month alarm feature became unreliable - sometimes it fires, sometimes not. Last 2 weeks it is not triggered at all.
Phone is not in silent mode. Alarm just does not come up - no vibration, no message, no sound. Checkmark is not reset on the alarm, the alarm itself is not removed (as it should after "Once" setting). Tried both standard and my own melodies - all the same.
Sometimes if I play with settings it works one next time, then becomes invalid again.
Has anyone experieced that? Have anyone cured that?
I don't want to do master reset loosing all installed programs (especially if it doesn't finally help).

You should find a quick reboot sorts it. The alarm is a known problem with UIQ3, dunno why it is but there you go. I haven't actually had an problems with mine since the f41 firmware so maybe you should update it. The other thing I noticed was that to keep playing with the alarm settings was the easiest way to make it stop working, in fact on the very first firmware i had (d23 i think) i took to rebooting the phone after editing or setting and alarm to make sure it actually worked!
