I often see posts asking "why does Japan get such a high tech sexy phone and not us...."?
There are some unique characteristic about the Japanese culture that makes it perfect for high speed, high tech phones (and these characteristics are hard to emulate here in Europe or the in the US).
Many Japanese houses have spaces which are multi-functional depending on what people doing. Walls may even be moved around during the day, and it is unlikely for example that a child would have his/her own room.
Entertaining at home is also unusual - socializing is usually done in restaurants, bars, arcades, coffee shops etc.
This makes the Japanese the perfect mobile consumers - usually they have no TV or computer in the bedroom and long commutes to and from work are the norm (by train, 1 hour if you are lucky, often 2).
In such a market it is not surprising that internet access from a mobile phone has been so popular (iMode) and that people are more willing to pay more (usually a lot more) for their mobile phones & mobile service than is normal in Europe & USA.
Hence it is inevitable that such sexy mobiles are released in Japan first (commanding a hefty premium) and later in the rest of the world.
So move to Japan and enjoy the latest in high tech gadgetry

Successor you mean.

Yeah, this is exactly the type of device that could succeed the S700i.

I don't see any flash on it though, which is a bit strange.

I'm sorry but I don't get the logic here. Yes, the Japanese culture is different, but that is a tangential issue and has nothing to do with the direction the conversation is going.
The remaining arguments do not make sense to me either. What do movable walls and out-of-home entertainment have anything to do with sexy design?
I can argue that Europeans and the rest of Asia, heck even Americans have differing cultures, but we all use the same GSM phones.
At the end of the day, it's how the
casing of the phone is substantially different from the usual Motorolas and Samsungs that all look the same (at least to me) that bewilders me and the rest who ask that one question you so conveniently argued against with tangential details.

I think Mike B's answer was spot on and if you look at the start of my post this i what I have been saying. Its very simple and I cant see why people cant understand the concept.
JAPAN IS ONE BIG BETA TESTER.....because of the size and sheer advancement in technology to the rest of the world SE and who ever will apply the concept, review the sales, asses the feedback and decide from a profit and loss making point of view which components or design should be released to the rest of the world.
And going back to the sliding doors again having been to Japan so many times you will see that Mike B has pointed out how the living conditions have influenced design. Space is everything in Tokyo, but over here you take for granted some of the "design concepts" so to speak that we are so used too on a daily basis. I could go on and on but until you see Japan as the beta tester it will be a long time coming when we see equally specd products.

Ah, yes. Japan beta-testing new technologies, like, err, guinea pigs (for lack of better word, my apologies for any Japanese forum users). Thank you, themarques. That makes more sense now.
