"IMO the real problem is this all manufacturers can get away with releasing not finished products because we the consumer accept them as such and will await a firmware to fix things. Maybe if and when we refused and returned them they would return to proper testing and making sure devices are fit to launch before doing so. But as long as we the consumers accept it nothing is going to change because as long as we are eager to give them our money they of course will take it."

I agree with the above however i also believe that a percentage of the complaints is due to the unrealistic expectations that people place on their phone. I understand that the cell phone has become or is on its way to becoming the all in one device, however its main function will always be to make phone calls. I have owned many phones over the years, and yes 90% of them were sony ericssons, but i have yet to come across a device that can meet all my needs. And even if i did three months later a newer and better version would come out rendering my all in one obsolete.

I agree, I am more than happy with what my p1 does, it's pretty stable - but no where near as stable as my 910 was. I had uptimes on my 910 that were measured in months, something I don't believe i will get from the p1.

But yes, I think many many people expect too much from phones like the p1 and n95 - each is a compromise, something which really shows up in my investigations into the WLAN on the p1. People see a phone that has a 3.2mpx camera, WLan, 3g, etc etc etc and expect it to perform as well as a 3g data card, 3.2mpx digicam and connect to wlans at the same speed as their wlan enabled laptop. End result? Disappointment. To top it all off, everyone wants all of this in a device that don't cost the earth.

Welcome to the world of convergence people, you can have fast connections or long battery life - not both! You certainly can't get it cheap!

@pnf1973

I also agree with what you say in that peoples expectations are some what unrealistic and that also convergence devices are always a compromise. Which is why eventually after 20 years odd i have given up on my search for my ultimate convergence device and decided i also don't want to carry 2 smart phones to achieve what i want.

I now have an E61 for my Data centric needs and an 80gb iPod for my Multimedia it may not be right for anyone else but for now it is for me.

@Dogmann

You do tend to end up thinking to yourself, why can't they just make a phone which is good at phone calls, does high speed internet, has a decent mp3 and video player on it, has a good quality camera and keeps track of everything i do, oh and has a battery that lasts a week

Joking aside, i think we aren't far off now, the likes of the n95 and p1 show its possible, it's just a matter of software now IMO. Apart from the battery bit, and wifi. For that our only hope is divine intervention

Hi, I'd also like to ask a few questions 'bout the P1i. Didn't feel like making a new topic since there's already one.

1. Is it responsive enough? ie. opening basic applications like media player, messaging inbox etc., when it's loaded with stuff.

2. About the activity menu, is it possible to put a shortcut direct to new sms and inbox?

3. Does it have vibrating alert?

4. How hard is it to use one-handed?

Sorry if it's a bit specific, Sony Ericsson stores here don't have actual units on display anymore, and I can't tell from the dummy units. Thanks.

1> its entirely subjective. I think its plenty fast enough, I have just about every app in the phone open at once at switching between them is instantaneous as a result.

2> ummmm yes, the standby screen icons can be set to new message (including new sms)

3> yes

4> not too bad, I find the combination of the soft menus with the keyboard and qwerty pretty good for one handed use. Again, your mileage will vary, i would suggest trying it before buying.

I would say it is very responsive... more responsive than my older P910i or other phones that I tried...

I agree to a point that sometimes we can be unrealistic in our expectations. The issue with UIQ however is that the phone has nowhere near the same stability level of the previous model.

Constant freezing, rebooting and rapid battery drain are unacceptable in any phone whether it is a base model or top of the range. Software bugs can be addressed but every phone should at least stay switched on for a day!

Now I never bothered with 990, I honestly didn't see the need to get it to replace my trusty old 910. TBH I thought it was just too expensive for what it was, I'm glad I got my p1 though. I find it pretty reliable - not as reliable as my 910, but then my 910 used to crash alot till I got a firmware update on it.

I do agree though, the 990 was just not good enough. I honestly think they battled with it during the design/proto stage and just simply ran out of time with it - the pace of development from Nokia and MS with their OSs just pushed SE into releasing SOMETHING just to actually have a new top flight pda handset. Was that right? almost certainly not.

You also have to remember how much different UIQ3 is to UIQ2, with UIQ3 they have attempted to come up with a complete OS/UI combination that can be used on any type of handset, touchscreen or not. Its simply the case that not enough development work was done on UIQ3, not enough resource was spent on it. Maybe the new partnership with Motorola will help ensure that this doesn't happen again and the next generation of SE/Motorola UIQ phones will actually be decent devices from the start.
