It's fine to turn off 3G if you're mainly sending texts and making calls - but if you've got it to pick up email (especially push email with something like Google Mail and IMAP) and visit web pages - then would you really want to keep going in to the menu to enable it/disable it?

In the future, we will have chipsets that consume a LOT less power for UMTS and this will solve the problem. For now, the solution can only be to have a larger capacity battery - or simply don't get a phone with 3G at all!

Yeah, well, I do all the stuff you have mentioned and I have 3G off...

When I am in my office, I use desktop PC/notebook, when I drive, I dont have time for browsing any websites and since I dont want to commit a suicide, I wont start soon.

As for the mail - yes you are right, but GPRS is far enough for push mail, as push mail is only plain text - and for this, I only download headers of the mail - saves money on data transfers and who would go through 65 slide, 25MB Powerpoint presentation in his/her phone? Enough to know that it has reached my mailbox. And when I really need to open it, I visit my favourite Cafe and download it via free WiFi hotspot. And thats about it...

But that is only how I do it. Of course, there are situations, when 3G is needed, but those who want to surf/download from web a lot - get i600 (just sold it ) or something similar with HSDPA - that makes sense.

I was told from the operator that 3G at full speed is only about twice the speed of 2.5G !
Since 3G spends 60% more power to reach this speed, it's better to have near 100% coverage of 2.5G to browse the web, than using 3G with low coverage.

A bit of figures - EDGE (is that what you call 2,5G?) has download rate of 236kbit or 30kb/s, honestly, you would be happy if you get half of it by experience...

Speaking about 3G/UMTS networks - you will get 384kbit or 48kb/s, in reality half is ok...

but, 3G in banana republics like the one I come from has been recently upgraded (more than 50 percent of population coverage) to HSDPA with date rate of 1,8/3,6Mbit or 460kb/s if you fancy... In real life, more than 250kb/s is usual.

And last but not least, I work in Poland (but applies also for Slovakia), this network is being now upgraded to HSDPA 7,2Mbit...

So what do you exactly mean by 2x faster?

Slovak example - Orange 3G/HSDPA coverage - most cities above 5k are covered:

2.5G = http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2.5G

I was comparing supported P1 speeds, that is GSM with UMTS.
UMTS is not that much faster - on the P1 - and spends much more batery.

Part of the problem at my home is that it regularly switches from one to another. This in itself causing massive battery drain, so locking it to 3G (or indeed GSM) prevents that. The only downside is that there can be the occasional time when I get no coverage.

Mind you, I'm on Orange and swapping from 2G to 3G really messes up a data connection. It can take 5-10 seconds for any data to continue flowing when changing over, and if that's happening regularly then there IS an argument to say it's better to simply lock it to GSM! Hardly the way forward though is it?

As for push email. I'm set up with my W960i to receive Google Mail and I can select how much is downloaded, so it's not text only like a BlackBerry. Headers aren't good enough for me, as I like to receive mail so I can read it immediately. The fault on the W960i (and presumably the P1i, but I don't have one to hand) is that it still takes a while to open an email. If it's not plain-text, it can take 30 seconds to open a tiny email! Still, that's an altogether different problem.

I use POP e-mail regularly on the P1 and as you know 90% of all e-mails today are HTML. My P1 as workes flawesly and opens all e-mails in a couple seconds, even complex ones.

@jmcomms - is the GPRS/3G only internet connection you have at home? I have DSL plugged into a WiFi router so I do not have to use GPRS/3G...

And for GMail - do you use any external application for that? Because P1i's client opens mail in 1-2 seconds.

No, it uses the internal messaging app. I have no idea why it is slow, although I have my suspicions.

1) I have lots of email, and I know that this might be causing the problem. If you get lots of RSS feeds, it takes AGES for it to sort them after finishing the download.

2) Some emails are HTML and it needs to go online to grab images, although I'd have expected it to display the text and fill things in. Maybe this is different to the P1?

3) Maybe it's an IMAP related problem in the code (SE, not Gmail or anything).

4) If I wait for it to download all the new mail, then leave it before trying to open a message, maybe it will be quicker to display messages then. See point 1.

In any case, it's not ideal!

@jmcomms: I think the delay happenes because you download the whole message, not just the headers thus the more time needed in order to open the full e-mail.
I use just the headers-option and I have to say it still takes a few seconds to open after it downloaded the body of the message. I don't mind...
