Well I got my first phone when I was 14 and I saved my pocket money for so long to afford it, and all I could get was the cheapest Ericsson (and almost the cheapest of any phone) available. My parents did not want me to get it, but I convinced them I needed it (lol), but they have never paid a cent towards any techy stuff I've ever bought.

My two PSPs, my DS, my Walkman, my many phones, my MacBook, my Sony digital camera, all earned by myself. Well I'm 20 now so you'd expect I would use my own $$$, but just making my point.

I think all kids should be made to earn their money and save for things, otherwise they'll never know how to deal with it and they'll rely on their parents for life because they just can't save. I know people my age who have never had a job because their parents give them up to $100 a week. When they get thrown out into the real world, they're going to suffer!

I understand where your coming from but if a parent wants to get there child a phone they why not, for example i have always had 'good' phones and mum got me a contract when i was 14 but i have always known what i want in a phone and what everything does in the phone and have looked after them.

I have an 11 year old Daughter, and I didn't want her to have any type of mobile until she was old enough.

Anyway, she now has my old e900, which is suffice for her, and I wouldn't dream of buying her a top of the range mobile, that I couldn't afford for myself.

Some of these kids are probably born into rich parents, which is fine, but they will grow up expecting everything.

Get them a paper round on a sunday morning for £2 like I'm sure we all did to earn a bit of extra money.

Yup exactly, and im sure you look after all your stuff right? For example my psp that i got from Japan still works perfectly where as my cousins psp which was much newer than mine has already packed in.

Some kids are defiantly spoilt but not all kids who have new stuff/latest gadgets

Times are changing , parents getting their kids phones is similar to parents buying their kids a computer or clothes or any other supposedly "necessary" item. Why are phones being targeted? Parents may want to know where their children are at all times, does'nt mean the child has to work and earn money for the phone .

It really doesn't matter how 'well' you look after it, thats a really poor excuse. It's a case of at that age, it's something you really REALLY don't need, you just want because it's 'cool'. So what if you know how to use it all, it's still wrong. Getting a contract at 14 is even worse.

Kid's will be being bought there first cars at 12 next....
