The NowMMS.com Free Service is Shutting Down
Regrettably, we must announce that the NowMMS.com free MMS service is shutting down effective July 18, 2003.
We apologise for the inconvenience, however a combination of factors has made it impractical and cost prohibitive for us to continue running this free service.
The popularity of the NowMMS.com service has caused us to exceed the monthly fees that we have budgeted for running the free service. This, combined with pricing and policy changes from our SMS service provider which would have further increased our costs, have led us to making the difficult decision that the free MMS services provided by NowMMS.com must be ended.
Before the complaint letters start to flow in, please keep in mind that we provided this service for free for the past 9 months, and never asked you for anything in return. (Yes, we did ask your permission to be able to send advertisements to your phone, but we never made use of that permission. There were plans for an advertiser driven service model, but unfortunately we just didn't have the internal staff resources necessary to sell and manage advertisers.)
We tried our best to fund the free NowMMS.com service ourselves, paying the monthly SMS service provider bill because we wanted to offer an alternative to mobile operator based MMS services. And we tried to keep the costs down, by limiting the support services that we did offer. (Initially we had a full time support person dedicated to NowMMS, but as the SMS service costs rose, we had to re-allocate poor overworked Kyle to another project.) We did save some money by the fact that the free NowMMS.com service was running the entire time on a Celeron equipped notebook that sat on the floor of our office next to the server rack didn't help the reliability of the service. Actually, it's quite amazing just how much MMS traffic we managed to pump through that poor old Celeron that is getting very tired, and is in desperate need of a rest.
With this announcement, we'll make one final plea for any sponsors that would like to fund the operations of the free service at NowMMS.com. Compared to many forms of advertising, a sponsorship of NowMMS.com is relatively inexpensive. If you are interested in exploring this possibility, please e-mail
nowmms@now.co.uk. But barring a miracle, we expect to be shutting down the free NowMMS.com service on July 18, 2003.
At the time of shut down, we do plan to destroy any contact information regarding subscriber accounts, so there is no need to delete your account in advance of this shutdown. E-mail addresses in the "nowmms.com" will also cease to be routed at the time of shutdown. However, we will continue to operate the public WAP gateway at IP address 213.48.20.10, as the only cost associated with the WAP gateway is IP connectivity.
If you are interested in the technology that was used to power the free NowMMS.com service, the service was hosted using the Now SMS/MMS Gateway product, with tens of thousands of users running on an old Celeron notebook. Trial copies of the Now SMS/MMS Gateway software are available for download at
http://www.nowsms.com.
Again, we apologise for the inconvenience of this shut down, and we regret that we have had to make the decision to terminate the free service.
