I live in Italy and also have the "emergency calls" problem and it occurs always when my phone shows a zero signal strength. The problem is the phone is regularly unable to get a signal in circumstances where my old siemens c35i has no problems at all. It has never crashed even once however.

Wow - there seems to be so many symptons, firmware versions, suggestions it seems impossible to track down the problem. Just to recap my firmware is R2D, i've only used Contacts, Email, SMS and Phone apps (all briefly) and it has reset twice in 2 weeks and...this is the really annoying thing...it reformats the disk on restart so i lose everything!! What the hell...maybe i'll just upgrade to R2F and hope for the best.

Wow, quick response, thanks, but *why* does it do this?

largely because when you switch between applications (camera, pictures, contacts, all of them) they are left open and running. if your p800 runs out of cache memory it will try to close some apps down, but soem of them must be left open (if you get an app like Tracker or Handy Day you can see what apps are running in th ebackground..)

best advice - and the advice i give all my callers (i work @ Orange 156) - Turn your phone off for 5 mins once a day. it prevents this from happening in 95% of cases.

EMERGENCY CALLS EXPLANATION:
You will have different experiences at Starbucks London depending on your network provider and roaming subscription. If you are with provider 1 who has a strong signal at Starbucks, then u will not get this message. If you are with network 2 who has a weak signal at starbucks, you will get the "emergency calls only" message, UNLESS you have a roaming subscription and the 2 networks have interconnect agreements in place, in which case your phone will switch to network 1. This message is VERY useful: ALL other phones say "No signal - you're screwed". SE phones say "No signal, but another network is OK here and it will allow you to make an emergency call even tho you don't have roaming or we don't have interconnect agreements".
PS: South African networks are well understood to be best in world. All above works perfectly here. You guys may be a victim of good SE technology on poor network infrastructure. Biggest issue in all noetworks in interconnect agreements between licensees. If network 1 hates network 2, they may be in the middle of a 1 to 2 year negotiation process around interconnect charges. It's brutal!

Finally, had my SE for a couple of weeks. No crashes on R1d, just the lost apps list that requires a restart. HOWEVER, I have gone to lengths to avoid anything that uses AppForge. Perhaps this is key? Also, I have filled the Duo, and have plenty of C space at all times. Touch wood...

Just thought I would provide some balance.

I've got lots of apps installed on my P800 MS (PJotter, Repligo, Opera, Mobi, jText, etc) and a few on the P800's memory (Tracker and a beta OGG player). I try to keep the P800 internal memory above 8MB.

AND I don't get crashes very often. I've probably had two in the last 3 months. I use my P800 every day for Email, the MP3 player, BT, GRPS, Mobipocket etc and have never really had a bad spate of crahes. May be I'm just luck - but it shows that the P800 can behave. And my P800 is on 24hrs a day!
