My friend 6 or 7 months ago bought the t100? (the samsung colour one anyway) on a orange contract, and the shop manager (of a private phone shop) told him if he bought the phone on contract, after 3 months he could do an orange pricematch scheme and match it with a virgin contract that had no monthly line rental. On the contract the phone was free and the line rental £25 per month, and he ended up paying only £75 plus call cost for his phone. Just wondered if anyone else has done this and is it still possible????

No you can't do that - you can only switch to OVP Virgin (the no line rental tariff) freely if you are out of your 12 month minumum term. If your are within your 12 month contract then to switch to OVP Virgin you have to pay £15 for each month left you have to go. Sounds like your friend was rather lucky if he managed to get away with it as I'm sure even when he did it the rule was the same (although it may have been £10 for each month back then - it did go up at one stage).

Far better option may be to switch to Orange HSD for £10/month and sit out the 12 months on that (cheaper than paying £15 for each month anyway). HSD tariff also happens to have very low call charges and SMS. Snag is you should have a HSCSD phone to get onto it - but if you don't you can usually blag it by saying you will be using the SIM in a HSCSD phone that you procured elsewhere - Orange usually accept that. T610 is HSCSD compatible of course so wouldn't be a problem (but would have been with the Samsung).

I will order a T610 from a german mobile phone retailer... the price there is 305€ plus 15€ delivery to the UK. If I change my pounds at my local postoffice or order it from their website that will be £240 without the hassle of having to unlock the phone plus it doesn't have any ugly branding on it. So that is a pretty good deal I think. If the Euro goes down at the stockmarkets the phone will be even cheaper! i am already praying

One more thing: this T610 deal on Orange Pay as You talk from avrmobiles.co.uk sounds really good. only problem is that the phone would be locked. Anyone know where I can get it unlocked?

@jellyellie

No you don't get inclusive minutes or SMS but the call charges are very low so it works out cheaper for me than the virtually all bundled tariffs. In fact only o2 online 200 would work out cheaper for me (and only just) - but that has expensive cust serv and no inclusive insurance and on HSD 0800 are free too.

Summary of costs on HSD:

On-net/Landlines: 15p Peak, 5p Offpeak
Off-net: 30p Peak, 12p Offpeak
SMS: 7p

In case you haven't picked it up for yourself, here it is specifically:

The Vodafone branded T610 is worth paying an extra £100 to avoid!

Their branding RUINS an otherwise excellent phone.
Also, I am not so sure about Phones4U: I have seen some bad stuff in here about them and a mate of mine is having real problems with them.

I think that this whole Vodafone branding thing is greatly exaggerated. I have a Vodafone branded t610, I agree that some of things isn’t that great. But it’s not THAT bad? U guys must be extreme perfectionists…

We are... !

Having got used to the wonderful T68i and being able to configure it exactly as I want, the restrictions on configuration put on the phone by vodafone make it less than what I expect.

I also resent having an undeletable image of a f**cking gaylord ferrari as I am a comitted bicycle and landrover man!
