Games/Apps I have seen written for J2ME have run fine on my T610. It's not like I'm trying to run full scale arcade type games. Q*bert, for example, runs fine. If J2ME was meant to run larger programs, they probably wouldn't have included it on the phone.
Mophun is a little faster, but mophun has been designed to run on phones. J2ME is meant for small/portable devices as a whole.
