When I bought my p900 the sales staff, whilst quite friendly although clearly leaving me feel as though I was a burden whilst she dealt with others, knew very little about anything important only that the P900 was the most expensive phone they stocked... what a cheary thought...
I consider myself as phone literate, but not in the league of a self proclaimed "geek", I know enough to do what I want with it which is all that matters and what I don't know i try to discover by using the phone (are the shops actually aware that using the phone would be a good way of learning how they work?), my main interest lies in computer type thingies (technical term!)...
However, when a sales rep cannot even give me simple explanations on the services provided by a network provider then it starts to worry me... this being my first GPRS phone as I had never really been interested prior to the P900, I sought clarification as to what prices and benefits this could bring... and what the difference was between Orange World and a normal GPRS bundle (I admit I had done a little research on this beforehand... thankfully)... suffice to say that this was a waste of my time and hers... not a clue... and whilst some may say that I you should ask the service provider... If I decide to buy from a store, I EXPECT them to be able to offer me information like this... it not being an amazingly techy type question...
But what may be passed off as a simple lack of knowledge becomes worse when they lie to you... Orange world does come with some text and picture messages according to their little booklet thing which was clearly plopped in front of her... contrary to the popular belief of this happy little sales rep... and then trying to get me to have the 3mb bundle free, when the 5mb bundle was the same price, i.e. "free"!!!... HO HO HO I think is the seasonal terminology... and don't get me started on the time it takes to be told these falsehoods...
I am sorry, well not really, to disagree with some on here, but if i intend to buy something from a high street shop, I believe they should be able to offer me at least some relevant advice... after all, if they sell the handsets, on behalf of whatever network, then they should know enough to be able to sell one... otherwise they should not stock the phone full stop... this way, there would be more handsets available for those "useful" stores...
Ok, so this particular store still got the sale, but I probably would have bought it whether there were sales reps or not (as i couldn't get the damned thing elsewhere), so perhaps these stores may as well start some form of self service shops instead, thus reducing the need for sales people full stop...

High street phone shops primarily service average Joe public with phones to have in their life.
Forums like these are generally populated by people who think phones are their life.
Big distinction.

On the contrary to one of the above threads....I work for Orange and we are actually judged (and in some cases paid) to show people how to get the most from their phones such as by using Bluetooth, WAP, MMS and connectivity questions in general.
Why do i think this is very fair? B'cos anyone can pick MR.Joe bloggs a nokia phone on a contract...its so simple that realy they could almost phone orange and connect themselves these days. This suits me fine as I am highly interested in phones and technology so i tend to be quite knowledgeable on the above mentioned areas.
Before you say anything I AM part time and still at uni finishing off the ends of my degree. But as i am interested in these things I tend to know slightly more than others.
My other staff there work one/two days a week and dont know shit from shit...they always ask a few of us who are clued up. This again suits us fine as we dont have to serve half-wits who simply want a FREE NOKIA on contract with bollocks ringtones etc etc!
This means that ALL OF YOU PEOPLE reading this prob get served by people like me who I dont mind serving/helping as the questions asked are more stimulating...rather than does this phone have POLYMORPHIC ringtones as one dip-shit said!
In general this suits me fine as I want to work in product design for a mobile company or in software testing...so the more brainier the people I serve...the more knowledge i aquire! (and the bigger the paycheck!) he he

Though not quite as aggressive in making my point as my friend in the post above, i have to agree that serving someone who is asking intelligent questions is much more stimulating than selling someone yet another cheap pay as you go.
I too started this job to help pay the way through university but am still here six months after getting my degree (such is today's job market). Having more than a passing interest in phones and all things technical, l tend to know more than most, and i know i am not the only one as i can see by the replies to this post.
I guess what narks us off about people whinging at the retail staff is that they're generalising. We're aren't all thick, in fact i dare say some of us know more than you!

True say my freind! Wish someone would give us peeps a job! I certainly aint going to be working in a retail shop for the rest of my life!
Without sounding arogant or looking to forward into the future...i will learn one thing...If i become managment of some sort one day i will always remember that there are all types of customers out there and that you will never get better feedback than going back and working/viewing customers at grass roots level (ie on the retail floor).

Come on guys, the first post in this thread is only highlighting the lack of new model information available from the average sales person on high end phones, thats lack of information which is NOT saying all staff are thick.
Far from it, i meet some idiots & also some great people who are frustrated at the SAME OLD QUESTIONS, this thread is light hearted & i'm sure most Esato users have been got out of the odd fix by helpfull staff in the past.
Although from a personal point of view i do think you are all cretins

@ pachy
Oh you!
I have very rarely had major problems when dealing with mobile phone shop staff. They tend to be reasonably knowledgeable on the average phones, etc. When it comes down to the more technical stuff there are usually one or two staff members who are more clued up on such matters.
What I would like to know is who actually gives a toss? I mean does it really matter all that much if you walk into a shop and are given advice by a cretin? If people are stupid themselves then they deserve to follow stupid advice. Most people on here are smart enough and are informed enough to make their own decisions without having to take advice.
Oh I have missed my rants
