Why white?? I thought that to produce white, leds allow the maximum of light and for black the minimum..

Phones use LCD screens, not LED screens. And as I explained earlier, TFT screens are built in a way and with lcd molecules which allow the light from the backlamp when they are NOT submitted to any electric field. To blacken a pixel, you have to apply an electric field around it. A transparent pixel consumes no power but an opaque one does. The transparent pixel will look white because the light of the backlamp can pass through it. But the consumption of a black pixel is very weak anyway because it comes only from current leaks. Not from any current flow, because there is none. So the current consumption comes almost entirely from the backlamp. Another thing that consumes current is when pixels are switched from white to black or the reverse. I don't know how much however.
Sorry if this is not clear, but to fully explain how an LCD screen works, I would need two pages.

Correct, and I want to add that the color of the LCD pixel doesnt matter as far as current consumption is concerned. Turning on/off pixels is the most critical factor but it is negligable when compared to the current drawn by the backlight.

I would say black uses less power;it is the color of the background.(at least on most phones):-D This message was posted from a T310

Your wrong, black is NOT the color of the background, the background is a lamp, so WHITE is the color of the background.

I did wonder how just changing the screen to a blue-y colour with a small clock on could actually save power on a T610 - surely the most energy-conscious thing to do would be to switch the screen off completely and disable the processor that runs it too for a screensaver?

Switching the screen off is what happens on the Z600. But obviously, it is silly to leave it on in a clamshell. On the other hand, the small B/W external screen then switches on.

I do wish manufacturers would give experienced users more ways to customise a phone, maybe a special menu mentioned in the manual that allows you to do things like disable the screen for power saving, or disable the screensaver totally, delete predefined items etc... that way people who know what they're doing could get a phone that works exactly how they want it to, and those who are "less wise" probably wouldn't bother reading about it, or if they did then might think twice about using it.
