@Paris: I never said that the K700 is crap. I said that from the reports of many users on many different forums, it seems that some samples have serious firmware problems. And so I feel the phone was not tested good enough before being released. That's all.
By the way, I am more interested in the european version of the SE W21S, if there is ever one.

You said that you were fed up hearing problems with the K700i from others and so you thought that this phone is not good enought based on others reports. This for me = the phone is crap. This is how i personally see things. Just to highlight how diferently people see the same things. So dont hear what they say but hear what you eyes say.

some samples have serious firmware problems? Firmwares come out with versions. a firmware version is exactly the same as another firmaware with the same version. Nothing can go wrong and leave bits out or flash the firmware wrong on the phone to introduce a few bugs. What can happen here is a network provider changing the firmware (vodafone *aham*) and while customizning it messing around and causing problems. With this case you should complain about them and NOT se bad quality assurance control.

At least buy the phone and then say it its tested enought or not. You can not tell how milk tastes if you did not taste it.

Why is it that people consider normal that the hardware must be OK, but that the firmware can be a piece of crap.

I know what you mean. I just pointed out that you are refering to SW bugs with wrong word.

Strictly speaking, manufacturing (or production) is what you do in a factory where all pieces (HW and SW/FW binary) are put together to form a complete product. With this in mind, SW bugs are not caused by manufacturing errors. But rather by design errors and hence should be found prior manufacturing. You see, it is a big difference.

I also whish for the perfect SW. But as a SW developer myself I know there is no such thing. The more complex a SW gets the harder it is to find all bugs in time since all projects have time lines that have to be met. The harder bugs are to find, the more likely it is we will have buggy SW in our phones. Just look how many updates there are for Windows XP still after a couple of years (just to compare).

If you want less buggy phone. Use one with much less features or one based on a SW that has been out for a while (Series 60/40 phones maybe). The K700 has a brand new SW and is expected to have some more bugs. By the time S700 is out, the SW should have matured and become more stable (S700 seem to be based on same SW as K700 and Z1010) although still not 100% perfect.

@Arne: OK I agree, english is not my mother language. So that using the word manufacturing for the firmware is a bit of a stretch. I should have used another word. But this was done on purpose, cause I still believe that the firmware is an integral part of the construction of a phone. It is so tightly linked to the hardware. I would not say the same of a program, or what I call software (Win XP is a piece of software, the BIOS is firmware, see what I mean?).
But we do understand each other.
By the way, next to my job as a professor at the University of Brussels, I am also a freelance program developer (in the field of telephony PC applications).

I'm using my k700 for almost two weeks now... never got a problem (aside from the nitpicking of the 2 key), its all fine.

Every phone (regardless of its manufacturer) has its own faults, the best way to do it is to check on reviews, forums and actually playing/using it. Then make your decision.

Look at the features, capabilities of the phone if it suits your lifestyle and usage, if it fits... then that's the fone for you.

hey,

what you guys don't understand is that the manufacturers take full responsibility for these bugs/defects. they will, as a matter of obligation fully update/replace any products that have inherent faults.
they have to, because the customers who buy the phones just as soon as they are released are also their most loyal customers. (for cars as well). And they don't want to lose out on these people. So, their testing periods go on until after the product is out on the market.

and talking about bugs on the nokia, my girlfriend's 6230 used to restart everytime she took a photo. i mean, that's a huge bug compared to what u guys are talkin about a k700i. apparently lots of phones had to be recalled. and she got a replacement for free.

Why can't you understand that apparently the quality check of the K700 at the factory is not up to par and that too many samples get to the shop with various bugs.
I wonder what you would say if you bought a car with the same kind of problems several people have with their phone, and would crash at the first turn.
My feeling: this phone has been released too early, before many manufacturing problems were solved. And that's a shame from SE.

Problems in the firmware are not manufacturing problems. If you get handsets that don't have any RF or has lines on the LCD - those are manufacturing problems.

SE can't check all FW problems. I'm sure that they've already ironed out most major kinks of the firmware but its impossible to conceive of everything that can go wrong in the real world. This is what users find and report to SE which they fix in FW updates.

another reason why there are so many bugs when a new model is released is maybe because there are so many vendors.
and this is not only for se but for any consumer product.
like, different parts come from different vendors and if these parts have a defect, it isn't the fault of se/nokia/samsung etc. and sometimes, during a testing cycle all these bugs may not have been fully investigated into.

This phone is buggy compared to your average phone, but this is no average phone, which is why most users here have it. I know I chose it for it's cutting edge package, rather than for stability or reliability.

I am not praising it merely out of worship. I'd honestly prefer a Samsung flip-phone which did all the things the k700i can, but that didn't exist when I needed a power phone.

Also, I have experienced that instability/bugginess. My k700i had some charging problems, and I had to send it in to a SE center. And yes, the firmware shipped originally with the phone was not perfect. But all in all, I will say this is a good phone for an advanced user who likes bells and whistles, which most of us do.
But if you just want your cell phone to be a phone and nothing else, then your right to not choose the k700i.
