From what I've seen the Smartmovie app using DivX (.avi) files look better with less pixelation & jumping than the built-in mp4 player. Tried it now on my old P900 and new P910i.

@BlackBauer24, the one on my-symbian IS the one being discussed in this thread just that a direct link t omakayama was given in the first post rather than a link to my-symbian but they are the same one

tranquil certainly seems happy with it!

I wasn't able to get DVD-2-Mobile app to work on my laptop, so I'm going to try Smartmovie. I have to find a DVD ripper first... Any suggestions?

I've downloaded a few from Download.com, but they're all trial versions. Anyone know of any freeware rippers? How about AVI-to-3gp converters so I can stay away from 3rd party apps (specifically Smartmovie).

Thanks in advance.

I bought DVD to Mobile and at first had the same problem of clicking action and nothing happening. I fiddled around with the setting about the number of frames to convert (you only seem to be able to access this by hitting reset all) to the maximum... Also I couldn't get it to convert James Bond Die Another Day, I think it tried to convert the menu only. It does work eventually, but is a bit tempremental. The end results are fairly impressive. Compression is v v slow though...

If your looking for a simple no fuss bit of software this is much easier than seperate rippers/encoders/compressers... (but the end result is probably not so good, and you don't have as much control over the conversion process)

I just got the DVD-TO-MOBILE software. Can't say I it works fine. Tried 4 dvd's. none of them i can convert. When I open the DVD the software crashes. Any other users had the same problem? The help manual does not say anything about this

Another qst.: if the movie is longer than 90 min. how can you use a second memory card to store the movie? does the software split up the dvd in parts?

Well I think the best option at the moment has got to be Pocket Divx Encoder. It has all the relevant settings from smartphone to VGA pda's, the best part being its free as well.

Check it out

a second alternative would be Intervideo DVDCopy 2 but that is a bit costly.

thanks for the info. But the pocket divx decoder isn't that only for decoding video files and not DVD? I use PVauthor for decoding to mpeg-4 for AVI & MPEG and gives me excellent video&audio on my p900. On the other hand, for converting DVDs to AVI or MPEG you suggest to use the DVDcopy software?

By the way for the MAKYAMAsoftware DVD-to mobile, I get video on my phone but no audio. The software gives the error message "'Sample not found, or audio decoding error. ....continue?' The help manual gives you limited solution and the software developpers say if the suggestions do not work, they are not able to fix the problem:
If the suggested solutions don't fix the problem they say that:" "There is no solution at this moment but we are looking into the matter. On average 90% of all DVD's will work with our software".

For the moviemaker for p800 which I also bought, I also get no audio for most AVI files. MPEG files are mostly muxeD thus more difficult tos queeze in the audio. Still, PVAuthor does a good job.

In summary for all smart phone portable cinema users:Don't take the short cut by buying simplistic encoding/conversion software. I am not really into product bashing, but I spend over 25 bucks on the mayama software (dvd-to mobile and moviemaker p900) and it succes ratio for playing movies on your mobile is very low ( I say 1 out 6 Dvd movies/AVI/MPEG video will play on the phone properly).

good links that helped me get the job done properly:

Any new suggestions/ccomments please post them! thanks.

These applications are freeware

To rip a dvd (only if you own the original dvd and you want to make a back up) to your harddrive use DVD Decrypter 3.5.1.0 this can be found at http://www.doom9.org/ click on Downloads and it is under Descrambling / Ripping tools

To convert the ripped dvd to avi or mpeg use DVDx 2.2 this can be found at http://sourceforge.net/projec[....]oup_id=72208&release_id=141177
