I have R2L firmware and I cannot mute the sound at all. Put it on the meeting profile and it is still on. Put the ringer volume right down and it is still on. I don't mind having a noise on the camera, but that particular noise is pathetic. No, it's worse than that. What was wrong with the T610 camera sound, now that sounded like a camera, not this full plastic bag falling on gravel sound!!!

I wonder where they came up with the sound?

Bring a real camera if you are going somewhere where you know you would like to take pictures and expect the shuttersound to be a problem

I don't know about where you live but in Australia the k700i marketing says "As much a camera as a phone"

Therefore they are saying it's a camera as well as a phone, so even if you don't want a phone you can buy it for the camera.

Now false advertising is illegal. Having a fake sound on a camera that cannot be turned off, is a joke.

If they marketed as "built-in camera", etc. there wouldn't be much of a problem, but the fact they market is as a joint camera/phone makes the noise a very big problem, because the noise makes you not being able to operate it like you would a camera.

Also the noise goes off after the photo is taken, therefore you can't stop it. In most cases (shops, streets, etc) it's perfectly legal to take photos of other people, so what are they going to do once it's taken? Sue you? No they'll lose unless it was taken in a bathroom/changeroom.

And anyone that was keen on taking secret photos of people would buy an actual camera that is easy to hide taking photos - pen cam, shoe cam, etc. Both fairly cheap and easier to disguise taking photos.

So forget the crap theory that some of you guys have. Anyone that was motivated to take hidden photos of people would use another camera device, or if they didn't want that, they would remove the speaker anyway.

As explained it depends on which region firmware you have - the same version R2L firmware comes adapted to different regions of the world - depending on those the ways/possibilities to turn of shuttersound differs.

Why keep debating the reasons ?
Didnt you get the point ?

No matter what S//E market the phone as they still have to follow regional rules and regulations. Some regions - not all which is why it can be turned of in some regions - have regulations that shuttersound are not allowed to be turned off for what ever reason that may be. The reasons doesnt matter at all. These regulations are desided by politicians and lobbyists - not by S//E.
If you do not agree to these regulations or feel they are stupid - then take it up with those politicians regulating your specific region. Dont hammer on S//E for the shuttersound.

Why is that so difficult for people to understand ?

Besides - stating that it is false advertising that it can be used as camera, just because shuttersound cannot be turned of - is rubbish.
Shuttersound does not prevent it from being used as camera in any way. It simply prevent you from taking pictures in places/situations where the noise of the shuttersound is annoying or not allowed.

Just like the noise of the ringtone is not welcome in a movietheater - doesnt mean its not a phone. Or prevent its normal use as a phone. Its just not welcome in certain situations.

I dont want to go into a stupid debate weather anyone by law are allowed to take pictures in public without peoples consent or not - thats not the point either - naturally anyone can take pictures in public - even of me without my consent - and I cant do anything about that legaly. Thats still not the point - the point is that if anyone deliberately take pictures of me knowing that I do not want them to in situations where I do not want them to, because they are so stupid that they beleive to have a birthgiven right to invade anyones privacy - legally or not - then they are a disrespectfull asswhole and I reserve my right to kick their but or trash that cameraphone as I please.

There is no law in Australia requiring a shutter sound to be there. Some people are calling for laws to make camera phones banned (One 54 year old woman who had a photo taken up her skirt anyway), but no such laws exist. In fact 99.99% of phones sold here have no audible camera sound or one that can be turned off.

Not a good example. The ringtone can be turned off, and the phone on silent so you can receive calls without a sound. Can't turn off the camera sounds.

I dont know how every country in the world is regulated - therefore I dont want to debate specific regions.

The ringtone/movietheater was only trying to describe that there are situations where certain elements are not welcome.

Likewise there are situations where cameras may not be welcome - dressingrooms in sportarenas, artexhibitions, governmentbuildings, whatever, think of something yourself - but even if cameras are not welcome there may still be a need for a phone. What should they do then ? Baan mobilephones with cameras in these places/situations all together ? in order to try and prevent a much stronger regulation on cameraphones the legistrators and the mobilebusiness in common try to do the next best thing - namely put on shuttersound that cannot be disabled. This is why some places there are regulations by law - and other places this is desided by the responsible mobilemanufacturers to keep a good image and prevent stronger regulations - perhaps this is the case in Australia.

What would you rather have ?

And yes there are allways ways to overcome or break laws and regulations - should that be a reason not to have any laws/regulations ?

I know I sound like Im all for shuttersound - I am not - I find it as silly and annoying as anyone - but Im trying not to be so narrowminded and only concern myself with my own small annoyments - if this is what it takes to prevent any wrongdoing or prevent stronger regulation on cameraphones because bigger forces than myself find it to be a problem - then Ill just live with it. Shuttersound doesnt make my life any poorer - and shouldent anyone elses either.

I do totally agree with those saying they could atleast have found a better sound if it have to be there.

Guys - Handy tip - You can use the extraordinarily loud sound of the camera to work to your advantage.

I found that it comes in particularly handy at social events such as bars and clubs. It generally comes down to timing so wait until everyones had a few, eye out a charming rabbit (aka, woman), make a few face to face exchanges, and snap away.

The shutter sound is usually accompanied either by:

a flirtatious struggle to remove the offending picture,
some idle banter followed by her number to accompany her photo
or (if you're an uncharming git) a slap!

Remember, it all comes down to the correct execution. If you dont get it right the first time, forget about it. Try it someother time. You dont wanna be taking photos all night. There's beer to be drunk!

Just a positive note on whats become a negative post!
