Woot 4 you. Really.

I got (or am getting) my p800 sim-free (second hand, but good condition) from a guy on ebay for 90 pounds. Now you may think that's a rip off, and that I should have gotten a contract phone, but think about the contract fees!!! I would NEVER use that much free minutes. (I have a home-phone..)

However, for those that would actally use these minutes, then go for it. Good for you, you are getting a good phone for less.

Good point. There are contract carriers in every non 3rd world country in the world. They make more money off of fees and surcharges then one would think. It's their way of seeing a return on the cheap price tags they put on their phones. Which is why they are still in business and are always growing. So technically one doesn't truely own the phone until all contract terms are mended. There's a reason why their name is on the phone. Which is why the contract carrier has primary reliability for their phones and SE likes to keep their hands away in providing service to branded phones. I guess an analogy can be made with plp that have to depend on credit card companies to buy what they can't afford. The ability to acquire something cheap usually results in greater consequences that opens up the possibility of getting raped in fees, taxes, and surcharges.

legally you own the phone as soon as you take out the contract. It is yours to keep. Firm ware updates are not that big a deal after all i can get it done through a service centre so its not the end of the world.

@BigFeat

Always respect your views but your probably a bit better off then many members on this forum (me included) and couldn't/wouldn't pay that kind of premium for getting the phones early contract free.

You shouldn't rule out contracts. Last time I got a P900 on an Orange contract and though it was locked/customised I bought it for £149.99 on a £50 contract but due to a legal loophole in CPW contract at the time (thanks as always to @pachy) I changed down contract to £15 the first month so total cost to me was £365.

This time on first day P910i available in UK I went in to buy it SIM free at CPW for £499.99 but salesman pointed out that even if I bought it with a Vodafone or O2 contract all the phones they had were unlocked SE originals.

O2 250 was cheapest option at £160 + £35 for 6 months then £15 for 6 months. Total cost £460 then all the free minutes & texts which are even doubled for 3 months. So again, a contract route was the best option especially as the P910i is virgin SE.

@psikey

I can respect that. You did what was best for you to accomodate your financial situation whatever that may be. In your case I totally agree with what you did. Nothing wrong with that. It seems like you made a choice that will suit you well in the end, but in generalities that is not always the case for most consumers.

A contract under any umbrella will more likely have terms that have the potential to better benefit the contractor then the contractee. It all depends where one has their priorities set. I'm just happy that I can leave my phone off for months at a time and not have the burden to continue making payments per a contract agreement regardless of whether I use it or not. Most don't have that flexibility.
