IMO, figures are good references for growth if you fairly consider all aspects. For some reasons surveys are not definitely reliable as they vary depending on the elements involved, the population, locality, etc. Most importantly, it varies depending on who's making the survey.

I would take figures only as a general guide if I were to go into the same business so I would know the strength and weaknesses of my competitors. As a consumer however, I still meticulously and open-mindedly check each range of products that fall in the category I'm interested in and pick which is best for me in price, functionality, etc.

one aspect i think SE is lacking is the differentiation of its products.

look at K700 and K500. K500 is actually the K700 with certain functions disabled. They look so similar in design that you can't really tell the difference until u analyse the spec closely. Because of price war with Nokia, u now hv the ridiculous situation where the price difference between K700 and K500 is like $30.

So in effect these 2 models are canabalising each other sales instead of growing sales in their respective segment.

The above also applies to P900 and P910 or the T290/T230/J200.

I totally understand and agree with your point. I just don't understand why you put more emphasis on SE products when Nokia is much more notorious in this area and has been doing that longer than SE has. Please, I don't want to start another Nokia vs. SE debate because it has been proven that neither sides will ever concede or yield and both will always have valid points to cover up to whatever areas they fail.

IMO any company will always venture into different schemes to make their products acceptable to the consumers, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. It's just business. Peace man!

@blackspot

i thought we r looking at SE issues here and it is not a SE vs Nokia. Your comment on Nokia is diverting the attention. If SE house is in a mess, it does not make it less messy by pointing to the fact that Nokia house is also in a mess.

You started this thread with comparisons. And then you indicate that one of the reasons where SE fails is in their lack of functional diversity in their products. This is also true to other manufacturers too like Samsung, Panasonic, Motorola, etc. I only mentioned Nokia because it is the most notorious. I'm not covering up for SE, I'm just saying that lack of functional diversity in the different models is not reason enough for a manufacturer to fail. Everybody know how Nokia is so successful in this area. Perhaps SE and other manufacturers found some light in this trend. Like I said, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

some of u mentioned that "quality" is one of SE strong point. nowadays, i don't know how much this factor affects the buying decision. if u ask me, u can hardly tell the different in build quality of SE phones compared to others. There r just made of plastic.

"Reliability" maybe a more important factor. Even this may not figure too much also. It is not like a jumbo jet where u hv a couple of million parts. A phone is just basically made up of solid state electronics. How many ways can things can go wrong?

I think most consumers realised and accepted that phones from all the major manufacturers provide acceptable quality and reliability. These 2 factors may not figure too prominently in the buying decision.

So what's left are features, design and pricing. imo, these are the governing factors that affect the buying decision. These 3 factors pull in different directions. ultimately the decision is based on a compromise of these 3 factors.

Exactly! "features, design and pricing", and for different consumers, different locality, different age bracket, different social levels, the balance shifts very dramatically to different directions. That is why I always prefer to be open-minded about brands when choosing a phone or any product for that matter.

@blackspot

bravo. u hit jackpot. that's what I'm trying to get at when I say SE product differentiation is not very good. Consumers have different taste and preferences like u said.

Put the T230/T290/J200/K500 side by side and stand 4 feet back. Don't u think all look too similar. Now do the same for Nokia 6610/7250/7260/5140/3220. Completely different outlook.

So SE still have a lot to learn from the grandmaster in playing the "remodelling/repackaging" game.

A good design is a kind of label of the brand, so similar fones arent the problem, more the se design itself imo. This message was posted from a T68i
