I said it was part of GSM, and you're using GSM phones so the handsets themselves do support it, it's the networks that don't. If you actually try to dial the emergency number (which of course you shouldn't, and I am not telling you to) the handset will do its part and try to connect to the network it's picking up, at which point the network will deny it access. Check the usenet archives from uk.telecom.mobile at
http://www.groups.google.com - I don't want people thinking they have the assurance they can always dial an emergency number when they can't. There are other countries that do support it, it's just the UK networks don't.

just tried it with my nokia too. you can dial 112 with no sim in but not 999 interestingly. my t610 does dial 999

good news guys
i went back to the shop and they gave me another k700i (locked to vodaphone) but the bloke even gave me £20 to get it unlocked
its still a second hand one but comes with the box, stereo handsfree, pc suite cd, box and manuals
it does have a chip at the top but the screen is mint
im going to keep the contract one ive ordered and sell this one and buy my mum a e700 for christmas so if anyones interested let me know
hopefully looking for £150 to buy a e700

ok mate fair enough. Ive just spoke to our network controller though and he is of the understanding that we have an agreement that allows you to dial emergency numbers even without your home network coverage.
