Well space being a factor for you brings lcds back in the game. If you do plan to get one then as nick said do not look for anything under 16ms responce time and 450:1 contrast ratio. Benq have quite a reputation for making very good tfts at the lowest prices. A 15" one from benq with above specs and native res 1024x768 will cost approx 17000Rs. Beware that lg and samsung products you find in this price range will be 1000-2000Rs cheaper but have 25ms response time and "300/400":1 contrast ratio so dont try and save on those 1000-2000Rs coz you'll end up buying the worst lcds. A good crt from samsung or lg will cost just 6000-7000Rs so now you can decide wat you want.
NOTE: Prices may have changed since i last checked some time back but this should give you a general idea

Thanks for that @clank. Ok now my vendor says my PC with a 17 inch CRT would cost around 30k. So if i get a pc with the same configuration with a TFT how much would i have to stretch my budget? Around 40k? Btw, my mom is hell bent on the LCD because she liked it when she saw one in real. So dad might just give in for an LCD, thanks to her! But i just wanted to confirm if going for an LCD is worth the extra money spent.

@whiz - approx from 7k (for cheap LCD) to 20k (awesome LG one i saw).
I asked the saleswoman how many of those LCD displays they sold and she said none

its 20k more than a normal CRT monitor but it was crisp and clear

@whiz well i particularly liked the benq lcd and it will extend your budget by 10k. Not worth it imho coz unless its ridiculously expensive it still wont have the color purity of a crt. Save your money or get some better components like amd 64bit or lots of 400mhz ram or a expensive graphics card

I still think that a TFT is the way to go. Seriously. But it IS your choice.
Oh and I can tell you, I'm not like your mum in that I don't take a look at something and suddenly be "hell-bent" on it., and being someone into 3D graphics and photoshop etc, I was choosy (even with the cheap budget).
But really it IS your choice...
Nick
Edit: And I just had a thought. If you spent it on a better Graphics card or whatever, the card would be obsolete WAY before the TFT...
