Yep, definitely the AMD 64. No competition. Ignore the "Hyper Threading" remark, its "Over-hyped" if you know what I mean.

dont know how (or where) u guys found that amd is quicker in audio/video encoding ? most amd's cant match even celeron d in these

32 stage pipelines gives intel a tremendous advantage over amd in this category.
@billy
if video encoding , compositing and stuff are your primary applications i certainly recommend intel (p4 e)

i feel u dont really understand the significance of hyper-threading. its a step towards the right direction.it saves a lot of wasted cpu cycles. its really useful and itll be very interesting to see hyperthreaded multicore cpu's.

I think its only 30 pipelines :-0 but not sure. More pipelines means more speed but if a miscalculation is made it has to go back farther. AMD are more efficient. The Pentium M is the best, the only thing that stops ot from being the best processor is its slow FSB, give it a 800+MHz and it'll beat them all. Till then AMD is better but Intel can make their processors cheaper and that's why they still have an edge there and it looks like they might get to dual-core first.

I am using an Acer Travelmate, with Centrino Technology, running at a P4 3.0Ghz equivalent, and it is super light.
My old laptop, used an AMD XP processor, and i must say, it was heavier, and also it consumed lots of power. I know they weren't meant to compare each other.
That's the only experience I've ever had.
I'm interested, at when I get a desktop, (if), in either an AMD processor, but I will probably go for an Apple anyway!

Im not saying HyperThreading isn't a step in the right direction, 'cause it definitely IS. The problem is that 64bit computing is a BIGGER step in the right direction. If you can give me a 64bit P4, thats has the same number of thingies per thingy (god damn I have a terrible mind block

) and using Hyper Threading I'd take it. But in general, I'd prefer the AMD 64 by far over what Intel has now...

The 64-bit version of windows isn't out yet and probably won't be till Intel releases its 64-bit processors. So till we can compare AMD and Intel 64-bit performance we can't tell for sure.

im sorry it was 31 stage pipelined not 32.
well,
"To battle branch misprediction, the Prescott Branch predictor has been tuned and predicts 10% of the mispredicted branches by Northwood correctly. That results in up to 20% better performance! And of course, the trace cache makes sure that a mispredicted branch does not need to restart the decoding stages. As a result, the misprediction penalty is not 39 stages, but 31 stages. The 8 stages of decoding do not need to happen again because in most cases, the Trace cache has the decoded instruction."
pentium m has the best performance for the clock (and undoubtley the best performance for the power (tdp)) ,i hope by next year itll have dual core and 667mhz fsb which might give it a good boost.

well, i belive 64bit enabled p4s are already on sale ,the new 6xxx series.im not quite sure of 64bit performance.

Well P4 6xx won't be out for a few more weeks. I hope the PentiumD won't be a dissapointment.
