the link with vhs and betamax was a teniuos and not very good link, i was trying to say just could you are one of the best at doing something does nt mean you will survive. betamax was the only example i could think of at the time.

I agree that SE have made huge inroads to the western europe market since they began but SE is still a joint venture between Sony and Ericsson to my knowledge so they did have two consumer bases to start from....my first phone (analogue) was an Ericsson!!
As for market share there is also one major factor that mobile companies have to fight against and thats the corporate phone market....the majority of corporate buyers are so blinkered that they go only for Nokia....this accounts for a huge huge amount of phones....I havent ever seen market share figures for the mobile phone sector but if the corporate market is not differentiated from the consumer one that would cause a huge distortion in Nokia's favor. (and don't forget that it is vodafone etc that supply these phones to the business sector so total Nokia sales include these figures too)....personally I hate the fact that when you get a company phone you get a pants Nokia...the very reason I have my own personal phone....!!

thats very true in the business im in every client i meet with and every person i work with has a nokia. we have no chose and no consideration is made into what a phone can do to enhance or contribute to our working day.
i guess it comes down to money and who is offering the best deals and nokia must flood the phone companies with huge discounts on the handsets.
we all have 6310i and they have great battery life but since most of my day is in a car with the phone on a hands free cradle and then its off in meetings the battery life of 5 days makes no difference to me, as for its feature well they are limited i end up using my own phone for most things except calls

Carving out your own niche in a highly competitive market is no mean feat.

i dont disagree that they are doing well .pricing i believe is quite subjective, in the uk you can buy a k700 for cheaper than a 6230 so that says to me they arent more expensive. yes se have increased there profit margin but they were on a lower base to start with comapred with the others. for example in 2004 se made 8% mark up per phone globaly. nokia made 18% per phone globaly (nokias was down by nearly 10%) by now i would think se and the others will be very similar.

Yeah I don't think SE is expensive. They are expensive during the first weeks, than quickly decrease in price and end up being waaaay cheaper of their nokia counter-parts within a few months.

@Slattery. No, it has been stated in a recent official report, posted in another thread that the average price SE's phones is highest and increasing. In the same report Nokia's fell as they slashed the prices to counteract slipping market share. I would post the link but I am Wapping.
Maybe some else could post the link.

ok so they are charging more i still think they are competitivly priced, if you look at similar phones to compete with se they aint a lot of diference,but i accept that the report says they are more. however selling price isnt profit margin. the profit margin is still in keeping with the rest of the sector at current time. this obviously may increase over time and out perform others in which case fair play to se as that will be a great feat to out perform estblished players in the field.

what is the point of this thread does it really matter if se are no 1 or no5 really the company made a 50 percent profit so is doing well looking at the new products coming out they only have to worry about samsung for technical items if se did make no1 people would all critise like they do nokia
