I think it just got a bit screwed. By the time Orange were ready to go with it, the V800 was out on Voda, making the Z1010 look like a rather poor relation. Chuck in Orange's crappy software to ruin the phone completely and you have a no-go phone pretty much.

don't know about you guys but if you have tried a v800 with z800 software the phone is ridiculous in speed.. it easily rivals the speed of nokia series 40.. all the animations do not slow down the phone at all.
the s7 and k7 series are slow.. but this next generation of SE phones are digustingly fast when it comes to the operating UI... even with all the animation

So talks that SE can not make EDGE phones are all bullshit.
The only reason is that they do not WANT to do that.
And the main reason for that is their UMTS goals and European market priorities at the present time.
Upgrading to EDGE from an existing GSM network requires changing all transmitting base stations of the network with EDGE compatible ones.
This is too expensive for most of the networks in Europe and instead they prefer to think about UMTS and skipping EDGE.
Of course it's not the case in newer GSM networks built later.
And yes it is strange that they have EDGE in NA, but not in India.
But having EDGE in all their phones would mean that a lot of potential UMTS handset buyers can be satisfied with EDGE for now which they do not want for sure.
