I can't say that I have ever noticed any real difference in reception between SE, Nokia, Motorola and Samsung.

unfortunately reception is one thing I have often noticed that is worse in SE phones.

I live in a poor reception area for Vodafone and indeed can only get 3G if I step outside the house. However, just today I had some of my old phones out charging their batteries and noticed the different signal strength indications.

The phones I had out were Motorola Startac 130 and V3, Nokia 8210 and 8250, Samsung D500 and SE T68i, T630, K700 and K750. All had Vodafone sim cards in them and while the SE were showing about 1/3 scale the others were 2/3 or more

Poor SE reception has often been a topic of dicussion here and unfortunately it is one area I do happen to agree with

I agree, I've found most SEs are pretty bad for reception, both the T68 and the T610 were particularly bad imo.

Things seem a bit better with my S700i, but the signal indicator fluctuates so much it's hard to tell, I hate to say it but I find calls are clearer signalwise on a Nokia!

the K750 is better than the K700 on reception I'm pleased to note.

I always end up hating Nokias whenever I use them. ERGONOMICS is what makes a phone nice to use (along with a comprehensive feature set, of which SE is better than any other phone on the market, smartphone features aside of course mib ). As far as reliability goes, apart from the firmware issue SE handsets are more reliable than any.

Nokia dip out on both scores.

I've already conceded the firmware issue, but because I can update the firmware, I can usually avoid reliability issues related to early firmware by updating, so I live with the need to update occasionally, in order to have the HARDWARE reliability, and the great ergonomics of SE phones.

I agree that SE Phones have build problems, some of them, so much different from old Ericsson phones. I have had T10, A2628, R320 and R520 (the last 2 are in use now). R320 is the most reliably built. Dropped it, squezeed it - nothing happened. Unfortunately it doesn't have bluetooth, as R520 has. R520 is a strong phone, it looks like having survived WW2 but still works. Had the R320 had bluetooth and some internal memory I would never upgrade. (It does everything a phone is to do...). Maybe the sony part of SE should take heed from older ericsson experience. Personally I like SE because of the ericsson part...it would be like sE , because only screen technology should come from sony...

And menuwise, I also do find Nokias awkward sometimes and not so intuitive as SE.

Like u say majority of users are Joe Public. So the software needs to be as idiot-proof as possible and yet at the same time cater to more advance users. I think you know that it is much more difficult to design to cater to less-savvy users than advance users. Maybe SE has not done their homework in this aspect.

it doesn't matter how intuitive the UI is, it won't make Joe Public read the manual. i think part of @scots' point was that most people will blame the handset for their own willfull ignorance, because they can't be bothered working things out - "it's not the same therefore it's broken". incidentally, a majority of the reviews i read tend to compliment the UI.

wrt reception, i have always found my z600 to have excellent reception compared with other handsets. i often have full bars when others do not, and superior call quality when fluctuating between nothing and one bar. the UI ran well straight out of the box and has only hung a handful of times, while physically it is quite sturdy.

Your point is only valid to a certain extent. How many of those reporting faults had switched from one manufacturer to another? Someone who has long used Samsung handsets, for exmaple, may have difficulty in operating a Motorola. Since both Nokia and Samsung are very popular brands in the UK, where this survey was carried out, one should expect people to be more familiar with their UI.

Does it actually matter if it comes from switching from one manufacturer to another? From UI desing point of view, no. Opinions, like yours, are then another matter.

If the UI is really intuitive enough, it doesn't matter. It's not a fault in the phone as such, but it sure is a bad UI desing. And no, there's no phone UI, that can title itself a really intuitive enough UI today. In fact, all of them are still pretty far from it. There are just more user friendly and less user friendly UIs.

BTW. I don't quite get why people are so defensive when someone publishes FFR stats for different manufacturers. I can see a lot of people making excuses why is it so. That's a way wrong approach to it. Those kind of stats should be taken seriously and make corrective actions accordingly. But of course I believe that SE will take those kind of stats seriously. It's just the SE fans who are trying to explain it to themselves somehow. And every manufacturer also have their own FFR data which they are relying.

SE really dissapointed me with the quality of the K700 - i bought it last year on the 29th june -
1) the back cover for the battery makes cracking noises when pressing any button - i already went to the se service center - they gave me a new one (which was very kind!) but after a month it cracked again
2) the joystick doesn't respond from time to time
3) the black arrow button vanished
4) the online sticker fell of
5) QuickSave sticker fell of
6) the black plastic cover which wants to save the connectors don't wants to stick to the phone - its always half open
7) the battery is always dusty(when i open the cover), even though i clean my phone once a month
the silver plastic around the lense (where the mirror is) is now dark grey(a half circle) - don't know the reason
9) the number keys a really terrible to use (you have to see it, to believe it)
10) the C button stays in the phone when i press it too often

i have never written down the problems i have with the k700
it is still a great phone - feature wise - but the quality sucks big times (don't have any issues with the software, works perfect)

Agree with all the points you raised excepting 10, I never had that problem. However I the only problem that actually irritated me is point 2, the other factors are more about perception than actual impediments to use (besides 10). Point 2 I've heard could be improved with updates, however my Vodafone handset wasn't updateable by SEUS, so I never bothered. The delay to me was acceptable, and it was the only thing that ever struck me as difficult about the phone. In all other respects it is sterling. One day I removed the cover and it got worse (I was very careful, and have a lot of experience pulling phones apart), so in fairness it probably is joystick design at fault rather than software.

I have often seen people commenting upon the apparent poor reception of SE handsets, mostly on American forums I have to say. It just isn't something I have noticed to any great extent.

My two cents:

- SE users are more technologically aware and notice those small bugs so they tend to service them and repair those bugs.
- Nokia users are dumb*rses what dont even know what a bug is. So they are HAPPY dumb*rses!
