Yes they are. Its just a matter of findning the buggs (because you don't see a bug it does not mean its not there). However, some phones may be perceived as more buggy than others. But that's another story.

I updated the firmware on my w800 simply because it was stated that the camera and menu speed was improved .. didn't have a problem with the way they were or my phone in general .. but if they get improved for free by just plugging the cable in and clicking the mouse a few times .. why not? .. I've suffered cos of it .. but no-one told me (nevermind forced me) to perform the update .. and I'll be updating again in the hope of fixing the issues the firmware has caused .. I accept my part in corrupting my phone somewhat and I'm sure SE accept theirs and a fix for the bugs will be available soon if not already .. which seemlessly brings me to the speech made on SE bashing .. nice post .. if there's any phone in my history of ownership that I've been unhappy with .. it's Nokia .. especially the 8210 .. and my friend is currently having issues with the 6260 .. I'd rather own a Samsung than a Nokia but I suggest phones in SE's range to friends when their upgrade options are available .. only this week has a friend gone from LG to a SE K608i on my recommendation .. granted it was the only model available on the 3 network but there was many Nokias/LG/Motorola phones he could have free-mindedly opted for ..

Like you I often push hardware to it's limits (mind you I haven't tried R1N yet) and because I'm sensitive to hardware I usually find a good balance between stock and tweaking. But sometimes I stuff up, and I certainly don't blame the Manufacturer, I just try and find a fix.
Mobile phone features and complexity are on a steep rise at the moment. The phones of today are basically mini-computers. Smartphones like XDAII can literally run Win95 via VM's. I'd love to do it

Now would it be O2's fault if I couldn't get doom running on win95 on my XDA pocketpc?
speaking of which I've just got pdosbox running on the pocketpc. Dukenukem and wolfenstein here we go..

As annoying as most bugs are, i think that they are here to stay as there is no such thing as bug free software, We just have to learn to live with them unfortuntely. Besides not all bugs are bad bugs some are good. ;-)

as someone with some economical knowledge something nobody has thought of till the moment: what about research and developement cost's? that's the most expensive part in the game. sure, SE, Nokia and all the others could test every, and I mean EVERY aspect of a phone in every possible combination before selling it (bluetooth to Win XP, 2000, Me, 98, MacOS 8, 9, 10, all the different Linux distros, Samsung, Nokia, older Ericssons, newer SE's, all PDA's in all possible firmware-combinations, ...) and finally sell it for about 1000 dollars or euros to cover the R&D-costs. and I don't talk of a P910 or whatever for 1000$, I talk about a simple phone like a T630, K500, low-end models. how much are you ready to pay for a K750 top-of-the-line phone? 3000$? I'm VERY (!!!) happy with my K750i I got for some 100 euros...
my 0.02$...
