Add the song to your iTunes library, select it with right click and click on "Convert selection to AAC". Have fun

itunes is very simple, if you need any help just pm me.
if you add to library it also helps, and put them in a folder inside the itunes folder. also, ripping cds is soooooo easy.

i've been using VLC to convert Mpeg into mp3 or save audio only from a video file and save it to any audio format. you can download it from here:

I compared the quality of mp3 and aac.
It's about the same : same size (aac a little bit bigger than mp3), same quality.
I converted an mp3 to m4a using dbpoweramp.
m4a, mp4 codec Release 3.5
FAAC v1.24.1
Quality 90 (VBR)
And I used Faad (AAC decoder) v2.1 Beta in wimamp to decode.
I think it's better to convert your audio files to mp3.
Wrong. You are comparing apples to oranges. If you compared a VBR MP3 encoded file against an AAC VBR encoded file you will find the MP3 file is much bigger.
Why use VBR anyway? VBR encoded files are WAY bigger then ABR. If you use the ABR codecs then you will find that a 96Kbps aac file is about 25% smaller than an MP3 128Kbps, with equivalent audio quality.

max you are wrong here, you should always use vbr as long as your player takes it.
vbr=variable bitrate.
abr=average bitrate.
vbr will give better quality, so you can either lower bitrate a little giving you smaller files, or stick with that improved quality.

compression is not the only important thing when converting audio. The quality is equally important, so it has to be a practical compromise between the two. IMO, bitrates lower than 112kbps for a stereo AAC or lower than 128kbps for a stereo mp3 will already show significant degradation in the sound quality.
It depends on the individual taste actually, but IMO 32kbps is too low even for mono at any format.
