People tend to overcomplicate these things.
3G is faster. But Edge probably has better coverage.

that's right, but for countries where there's no 3G coverage, mine included, getting a 3G phone is a total waste. it's better to get EDGE fot that case then.

I just called a Cingular store rep. He said that GSM 850 was important (so will I have to wait for k790a!!) and that 3G was a better choice than EDGE (although his company's website espouses differently).
I'm currently quite confused. If anyone could help, I live in Washington, DC USA, I'm on Cingular and I'm between k800x and k790x. What is my best choice!!!

for the second time I've read that K790 will bring some fixes and improvements over the k800 and it will have a different firmware. does anyone knows if this is true?

3g is Definetly faster/better than EDGE, not sure where you saw on Cingular's website otherwise. The biggest problem is that the K800, being 3G is not compatible with the US/Cingular 3G network AND it lacks the 850mhz frequency which is widely (and expandingly) used by Cingular in place of the Old AT&T 1900 frequency. Right now getting a K800 in the US would be a waste from two points of view - 1) it lacks the 850 frequency as mentioned abovce, which restricts its usefulness on the Cingular network and 2) it lacks EDGE, so even if you live in an area which does not need 850mhz, or are on the T-Mobile network (which does not use 850 nearly as much), you're still lacking any sort of high-speed internet, since you'd be limited to GPRS speeds, which are worse than dial-up.
I'm currently holding off to see if the US released K790 will be tri-band with 850/1800/1900 or (hopefully) a quad-band 850/900/1800/1900, since I would like to use this phone when traveling to Europe (eastern to be exact) where the 900 frequency is used heavily.

Got mine 2 days ago. its triband and got fw: R1CC003. Not sure if its different from the k800?
