I think we have to accept that the P990 was not a very successful model, for all the well known reasons. Regardless of whether it works well now (with current firmware) it's now old first-generation technology compared with the latest Nokia flagships, at least in terms of Symbian 9. It makes sense to cease production now, even if there is no obvious replacement - if a high price premium phone is outdated and not selling any more, you don't just keep churning it out as a "flagship" just for the sake of it - especially when that flagship has a slightly tarnished reputation.
My personal guess is that, sadly, this is the end of the P series - at least for now. The next flagship will be the M610i, combining the succesful new form factor of the M600 with some of the P990's better features (wifi, camera), and hopefully a bit more memory.
