@nanu - surely you only need the joypad if you have a "flip closed" mode? It's like the chicken and the egg - which came first - or at least which justifies which... on the M600 you always have access to the the full menu and can navigate that quickly and easily with the jog dial and the soft buttons right there on the screen (it is a touchscreen after all) - there's never been a need for anything more, although I agree a five way jog instead of the back button would be nice..

The M600 & P700 still lack the joypad and softkeys so it will never be as easy to use as the P990 in flip closed mode, i really like how easy it is to use the P990 for simple task's with the flip closed and then open it up to use the qwerty whilst emailing or browsing the internet.
I also think that bringing back the 5 way jog dial would make these phones a lot easier to operate!
Here here, I have the P990 and the W950 and I find the P990i very much more simple to use than the W950, the W950 needs either a 5 ay jog wheel or a Joypad swapping between tabs etc is NOt a one handed action with the W950.

The true P990 sucessor will have flip, so flip fans can avoid buying the P700

With the M600/P700 style keypad you can swap tabs with the * and # keys. There's literally nothing you can't do one-handed, I wonder if the same is really true of the P990?

My point on this whole matter is the flip enables the user to use the phone without having to touch the screen negating the need to get the stylus out which for me is great. I started with a P800 and to the this day do not like to touch the screen with my greasy paws so hence the need for the flip!
And the flip does everything i need the phone to do in flip closed mode, so for me and however many others the flip is a necessity!
the soft buttons right there on the screen (it is a touchscreen after all)
You are asking for justification in the flip yet in your own post you clarify the need for the flip!
I want to perform basic tasks on my phone without having to get out the stylus or touching the screen with my fingers!

solved this and gave us the flip!
That said i think the M600 is a great phone and i love my W950 but the 5-way jog would definitely improve the usability of these phones!

I know what you're saying nanu, and when I first got the M600 I felt the same (after having the P800 and P910 before it) - I really didn't want to touch the screen with my fingers. BUT, it soon became second nature to me, and hasn't been a problem at all - in fact, in use, it just makes sense. After about six months of use my screen hasn't been damaged in anyway, it's not visibly dirty or greasy, it's suffered no ill effects at all.
Saying all that, the lack of soft buttons is not justification for a whole flip! The truth is, if you look at these phones, there is plenty of space under the screen on both the M600 and P700 where SE could have put a pair of soft buttons, if they had seen fit to do so - they just haven't. They took advantage of the fact that these are touchscreen phones instead, and that makes sense to some extent.
In any case, the soft key buttons on the P990 flip aren't an alternative to the touchscreen buttons on the M600/P700. They're only active in the P990's "flip closed" mode, and that in itself is a deliberately cut-down version of UIQ3's full functionality which doesn't feature on the M600 and P700, because there's no need for it without the flip. With the flip closed, there are various things you can't do anyway, softkey or not - and with the flip open, there's no way to easily navigate without getting your pen out - because the buttons which would have been in a convenient softkey position on the bottom of the M600/P700's screen are put out of reach along the top of the P990's, making it deliberately harder to use. You might argue that SE didn't really get it completely right in either phone, but I can't help thinking that what you'd really like is a P700 with a couple of proper soft keys, rather than a P700 with a flip.

I'll say one last thing regarding this matter and then i think it would be best to let others have their say!
Even though i like the flip on the P990 i really love using my W950 even though through my own inhibitions i have to get the stylus out each time i use it (and to be honest i can tolerate that with the W950)
I really do wish that the P990 had the same layout in flip open or flip off as the M600/W950, then the P990 would be more of a joy and easier to use without the flip!!

Again, I just feel that the flip on the p990 is made to be important. Its not impossible to put a dpad on the phone but they chose to put it on the flip. In the same way the qwerty is useless in standby. These two design elements work together to make the flip very important but it shouldn't be.
Theres only one good reason for the flip and that is if theres a big screen and no space for a keypad/qwerty as the case with the other P series but not on the p990.
Maybe some like the flip as a fashion thing but without the flip its as if the p990 bulk has been halved.
@nanu
I was reluctant to touch the screen too but after opening a thread here everyone said they do, I do too now makes using the phone a breeze and its how its design to be used.
