I'd like to give you guys and gals some advice... from someone who works in the industry.
I have managed a phone shop for just over a year now. The work we do as managers is stressful, long hours, affects your health, your diet, your social life, your marriage... I think you get the picture! The only reward the company offers is money (lots of it).
Please do not think it is any easier or less stressful if you join as a Sales Consultant or middle management - it's just as hard at every level.
The reason why some of you are finding it difficult to get in to the industry without experience is down to the pressure applied to the managers by the company. We can't afford to take on people who need trained every step of the way, why? Because it takes time. Time we don't have. Our every waking minute spent at work is focused on that sales floor, the sales team and hitting targets. I apply the same pressure to my guys that I get applied to me. Nothing happens until we sell something, people don't get paid until we sell something... and you're only as good as your last sale!
Working in high pressure sales isn't for every one. If you're single, no dependants and really greedy, it could be for you - as long as you can deal with huge amounts of stress! Phone companies expect you to hit all targets, every day, every week and evey month. If you do, big bonus followed by a bigger target the month after. If you fail - no job! It's as simple as that.
When you're in this industry, people treat you differently. You get head hunted by other companies because they know how sales focused you are. However there is a downside to that; when you want to leave and work for a company that focuses more on customer satisfaction, they shy away from us, why? Because we have a reputation as aggressive sales managers that only care about profit and not the customer.
So think to yourself.... when you're weighing up the Pros and Cons of getting a sales job in the phone industry; is it worth sacrificing some of the most important things in your life for money? Some of you right now will be thinking "I can juggle a relationship and a high pressure job" - forget your ego. These companies zap all your energy and time. So you'll have no quality time for a relationship or for friends. You're tired at night so you can't be bothered with the gym. The job is so busy through the day; you end up taking 10 mins for lunch and eating all the wrong foods, so your diet and subsequently your health suffers.
I only have 12 years experience in Sale Management (or is that 1 years experience repeated 12 time!). So it's up to you whether you heed my advice or not.
Make your decision count. Good Luck.

the retail industry is abit hard they aim more at people who have experience cos they don't have to train them up and heres me in that boat..
ive got 3 weeks Shop asistant with tesco experience thats it
I just wish the retail industry wasn't like that!
i'll keep trying btw..

Its preety tough miss uk but i have the following suggestions: Since we cant buy expesience, a part time job can be good to give you all tge experiance you want. About your gcse results, you can still get a private teacher. Thats what Iam doing now. Its better than going back to school. Hope you make it either way. Good luck.
