I hate the way people seem to think the joysticks just have problems because they are heavy handed or such.

I'm not heavy handed at all with my phones at all. And as I've explained, I had some joysticks that were fine and others that werent. I guess some people are just lucky. But its an obvious problem and I'm convinced its a manufacturing problem because the joysticks can be temporerily fixed by cleaning etc. I don't see why we should have to put up with this lottery and it would be easily solved by using a d-pad.

I'd only had my K800 2 weeks when the joystick started behaving faulty and I was stupid enough not to return it!

I never said that heavy handedness is the only cause of joystick problems. Keeping them in pockets also contributes due to the high amount of dust and dead skin that accumulates in there. There are other factors too. I'm not saying there isn't a problem with joysticks (but it's not only SE who have problems so really PLEASE stop making out SE are any worse than any other brand that uses joysticks).

Joysticks are inherrantly more vulnurable than dpads, but I certainly don't mind cleaning my joystick to keep it in working order. Hey we replace the fuel filter in our cars, if you don't the injectors clog up, likewise what's wrong with having to maintain a sensitive piece of equipment like a joystick if joysticks is what you prefer to use?

It's certainly not a matter of luck whether you get a joystick that lasts or not. Every person I know who has problems with joysticks always has problems. Every person I know who doesn't have problems with joysticks never does. It's simply not the case that if you are lucky you'll get a good joystick. SE have consistant quality control (for that matter so do most brands) and it's crazy to suggest they can't make a joystick with consistant quality.

In one example (of many), my Brother in Law had 2 K750's over 12 months, to my one K750 which is still going stong (2 years on). Both my bro's joysticks scrubbed out very early on, necessitating a new phone. He kept his phone in his pocket with no case and his daughter played games a lot and she was rough with it. Now, the ONLY time my joystick got dodgy, was when I was letting my niece (his daughter) play games on my phone. When she grew bored of it the joystick was dodgy as. I cleaned it, and that was 18 months ago and the problem never came back.

This is just one small example.

So PLEASE don't get all hurt when you think we are judging you for your joystick use. Who knows why your joystick craps out early? Maybe you should look more closely at how you use it and the phone, rather than trying to deprive me and others like me of our beloved joysticks.

Surely SE are entitled to offer a choice? If you don't trust joysticks, don't buy a phone with joysticks. Simple.

Please explain to me why you can't just buy a phone without a joystick, rather than have to make it into an either/or issue?

w810, w850, w880, W610, W660, K200, K550, K610....and that's just the candy bars.

What if I wanted a Walkman phone with joystick? I'm outta luck, same diff mate. (oh unless I want an old school W700/W800)

So it's not perfect but it's better than not having a choice at all. Besides, I'd take a W880 over Samsung D900 any day.
