I love the flipless P1. It seems so much simpler not to have two modes and have to decide which to use. It works better than in a P900 with flip removed, because everything about the P1 is designed for flipness where-as with the P900 it is was just one, relatively rare, option.

Also it makes the phone smaller. I don't think a P2 should be bigger than a P1. I expect the screen will get more pixels without becoming physically bigger.

this is my take.

P1 design but a flush screen like the W960 so its easier to press the corners, and on the empty black strip above the qwerty a call and end button with a 5 way d-pad in the middle.

keep the soft key UI but allow them to be selectable via the d-pad.
dedicated call and end buttons to fully take over the phone program.

i concur with increasing pixels.

Well, i dont want any other differences, if a buy from SE in the future again, on the same M600 platform, but with some extra keys on the free space on the phone...

Or some key arrows, to be able to use the phone with just the keys sometimes...

Thats just a poor mix between the W960 and P990 keypad and looks lousy imo.

Think SE have lost the plot actually. Wonderful extras like document viewers, internet browsers, enough memory to use as mp3 player are now found in cheaper, smaller mass market phones.

Qwerty- faced format now largely owned by blackberry devices as their designer actually did type on the prototype before shipping them!

P series therefore needs to be focussed between Internet applications and email/web page entry. Mail and therefore querty has to be good enough I dont want a Blackberry in one pocket and PXXX in the other

At this price it needs wow appeal and current P / M series has little

Prescription:
Large hispec 800x300+ screen reminiscent of iPhone.
TyTn style slide out side qwerty keypad and rollerball-mouse and
Full Qwerty(incl secondary characters)/hand writing recognition on touch screen
Fabulous web browser flash /shockwave/video capable etc
Fabulous push and pull mail facilities
Ample free RAM, fast processor
Full, yes full SE! syncing with Outlook, everything, properly, reliably!!!
If doing GPS please do it properly or don't bother
Utterly robust operating system (see P900, SE have gone backwards here)
Slide on slim/fat battery options
Fat battery option can include up to 30GB of flash ram

I better start saving or get a loan then... Both for the phone and the backpack I'll need to carry it around in

But I find the P1i to be pretty sweet... Ofcourse it isn't the best and newest although I mainly just wished they included a faster cpu but it's a great all rounder!

The keyboard is a blessing, it's really just a matter of getting a bit used to it and then you're in heaven. I really hope it's included in future versions as well...

A few extra buttons would be nice (mainly arrow keys) but hell, I can live without them.

All in all the P1i is the perfect solution for people wanting a phone with all (or a lot of) possibilities in an acceptable form-factor. It is what the P990 should've been yeah but even though it's a bit late it's still a great phone.

He, you are welcome to the keyboard if it works for you. I have fat fingers

My point on other items was that size/weight of big battery/memory is then optional, providing two phone propositions from 1 design.
Cost of software/silicon is minor if they get some volume sales on a model
And as for SE being an alternative to blackberry yep, they can be that but they are then fighting for space in a small difficult 'second player' market. They need a differentiated focus to get a return, and without a return bye bye P series

It's a bit sad just to agree with that, but I do. And after I tried using a HTC S710 for a while, I agree even more - it's just not solid enough to have a slider, imo, on something that has to be built like a mobile phone - and it's not useful enough to have a keyboard underneath the phone either, because you just don't type that much faster when the keyboard is so small. And I really don't flip open the phone and, you know, "sit down to write" just to write an sms.. And just like the keyboard on the p1 - you don't write an essay on it, anyway. So in the end I've gone back to using the p1, and switched the on- screen keyboard off, because it's completely useless when you have the p1/m600 keys. And it's much slower.

Also, removing all the soft- buttons was an excellent idea, and so was replacing the joystick with a touch- interface, in my opinion. Less things that can break, and much better controls - editing an image, for instance, actually works with a touch- interface. And so does games, so why go back to the joypad?

Still, a better battery, a slightly bigger screen (perhaps more pixels as well, and more easily switchable resolutions, at least if the hardware expects opportunities for some intelligent ways to develop drawing algorithms to save power and cpu operations), and another look at the UI layout between the screen and the hardware buttons as a concept (while thinking about simplicity - perhaps a button for mapping functions inside applications?). And, perhaps also a more solid frame that's a bit slimmer (and with less air under the screen), without all the shiny plastic all over (and which can be replaced if you scratch the phone or drop it) - and we're almost there.

Then it'll just be a question of how good the software is, imo.

Ho hum,

I'm told Sony Ericsson have placed an order with HTC for over 1million Windows mobile smartphones for 2008 delivery.

Wonder if they will look as you request, or a lot like a TyTN / Touch?

Wonder if that's why no P2, P3 etc rumours are in the wild?

I thas after all gone a bit quiet on the firmware /model evolution front
