I never need to use the search facility. It's quicker to just type the first letter of the contact's name on your keypad whilst in the contacts list. All the names beginning with that letter then appear and I can scroll through just that letter, select my contact and hit dial - that is far quicker for me than any other method.

I use it for mail- recipients very often. You remember part of a name, or you remember a nickname, perhaps (the handle on the mail- address?) - and then just searching for that turns up the nick- name and the contacts that match. Useful. Or if you want to send a mail to all recipients who are member of a particular group (which because you're lazy, you haven't updated completely in the "groups" listing yet), then you could search for an id of some sort you actually had time to punch in, and you'd save a lot of work. Or perhaps you remember the address, and not the name (don't laugh).

I agree it's a shame the P1 (or the P990, or the M600 I currently own) doesn't have proper contacts search - and no, I don't think you should have to buy and use a third party app to get it. For starters, there's no way to make those third party apps the default, so they really aren't much of a substitute in my view.

On the P800 and P910 I used previously, I was quite used to being able to find business contacts (who, since they were not friends as such, I often didn't remember the name of) just by entering their company name and searching on that - sadly that's not possible in UIQ3.

Nevertheless, I love everything else about the M600's software, and I'm looking forward to getting my hands on the P1. The comments on the keyboard are right - it's miles better than the P990's once you've practised a little. Also, once you lose the hangup about touching the screen (and honestly, after a year's use of the M600 it's the most natural thing in the world) it's much better for one-handed use to. Forget the flip...

@Boinng

Can't speak for the M600i, but the P990 has a 'find' function, which is proper enough imo, as you can switch bet 'name & company' and 'all fields' while searching.

Check my post with pics here:

myth - apologies, looks like that's one area in which the P990 beats both the M600 and the P1. It's omission from the M600 is strange enough, but to leave it out of the P1 is really stupid..

That's note the point! The point is when you CAN'T remember your contact's name at all but do remember, for example, where he/she lives. Example: I have a lote of restaurants in my contacts. If i like to search just for the city restaurants, am I supposed to remember all of then by name?

You must be a 'power user' then, lol. I have no need for such a function but I can see that in certain circumstances someone might.
