Right, well good news, I won the dispute, however I'm not sure I should have.
I spoke to royal mail last week over the phone and they seem to think it was not delivered, they opened a case into it. In the meantime I have received the money back from paypal.
Question is now what to do?
Royal Mail told me they would get back to me once they had worked out what had happened to the item. I am thinking that the buyer will be very unhappy and will probably phone me today and shout at me and threaten me with police action.
So my plan, is to stay calm and tell them I will wait until I hear back from Royal Mail themselves. What more can I do?

Congratulations, now where's my own trumpet? I don't want to blow it but...
The police can't and won't do anything at all if the buyer tries to make a complaint. There is no evidence to suggest that a crime has taken place and anyway, this is a civil matter.
If the buyer calls, all you can do is explain the situation with royal mail and give them all of the relevant details so that they can follow it up themselves as well. If they start getting nasty, put the phone down! If they keep calling you, block or bar their number.
Sounds bad I know, but I've been in similar situations many times. When I worked at our old PC repair shop, we even had to take a restraining order out against one timewaster because he kept turning up at the shop asking stupid questions about computers. When we politely asked him to stop, he developed a vendetta against us and started vandalizing our signs, abusing customers etc.
If they can't remain civil towards you then they are not worth speaking to.

if the guy calls you again and is genuinely f**ked off abotu not getting the parcel then tell him you spoke to royal mail and they are investigating it, if he threatens with police action, you have proof you posted it from that thingy above, and therefore its outta your hands

The buyer is now asking for my name and address so report the case to the police. Not me; the fact that the item has gone missing, this is what he asked.
"hi i would like to know if you could please send me your address so that the post office here can have it and the police for the records if you dont mind
thank you."
Take it there is no harm in telling him it?
