let's get it straight shall we? SE is not just a "branch" of Sony. SE is owned by both Sony and Ericsson in 50/50 proportion. Ericsson is one of the biggest providers of mobile network technology in Europe. They have as much standing in their own industry as Sony do in electronics.

Both Ericsson and Sony have equal say in decision making at SE.

I just want a K850i!! I have read a lot of bad and good about both the phone and its manufacturer, SE.

But at this point, it is the only phone I want. No other phones presently offered over here in the US appeal to me. I want candy bar style, I DO NOT want a flip phone. That right there, limits me to all but a handful of selections.

I pretty much have to pay full price if I want a non-flip, and I don't enjoy that thought. Over here there are way to many spoiled people, we have a HUGE disposable economy and that just makes it all worse in the cell phone market. When one breaks, we simply buy a new one because it is easier and cheaper than having the old one repaired. Most likely true in other parts of the world as well, but couldn't be any truer here in the US.

Hope AT&T picks this phone up before I move outta the US!

Cell phones in the USA do indeed suck. I live there. I should know.

I've made several heads explode by telling people what my unlocked K790a can do. I've caused pulmonary failure by explaining the feature set of my N95. Americans simply have no concept of phones beyond what the carriers offer. It's sad, really. And it's nothing to do with low GSM presence--the largest carrier in the States is GSM. It's that unlocked phones are not marketed. Also, as has been said, SE refuses to put the 850 band and EDGE in their high-end models. So, yeah, Americans have a low satisfaction with SE...as there there are only two SE phones on the market here at any one time, both either low or mid end. Not exactly stunning.

If SE marketed stuff more here (either via carriers or unlocked), their phones would catch on quickly.

Oh, and flip phones suck. I'm personally ashamed to live in a country where flips are considered stylish.

so true indeed.
when someone at a coffee shop sees my phone they want to know about it,and when they see what it can do they want to know where they can get one,so i dont think that americans dont want this tech, its just most dont know it even exists. i dont know if its the carriers fault or just closed minded stupidity??
by the way flip phones are the most popular in japan aswell (the kings of avant tech) its just a matter of culture,and fasion me thinks

The main problem as I see it is that the cell phone companies dominate what phones the people know about simply because the people go to them to get both a phone and service.

Four carriers dominate the market,Verizon,ATT,T-Mobile and Sprint. They all insist on you using their phones. It is not like elsewhere where you just go and buy a sim card and go home and pop it in your phone.

The Iphone right now is experiencing a buzz and is getting a a high from what people have come to expect of Apple as a company regarding service and innovation.
Also,most people just don't know what is available. I have been here in the US since June with my P990i and I feel outdated while Americans with their Iphone with almost the same features except the UI feel as though it is the phone that God would use.
Plus I was shocked to learn that one has to pay for incoming calls here in the mighty US. Imagine that to this day and age.

SE also does not cater to the US market. Imagine that they are making high end phones like the p990i and not making them quad band. I personally have a real problem with that. I lived in the inland empire for a while and the 850 affected me at times. However now I am in the Miami area I have not had much problems.

I also don't expect the Iphone to do to well in Europe unless they have them unlocked and stop crying about people unlocking phones that they paid full price for.

Bottom line is that it is mostly the fault of the networks and then secondly

A great deal of valid points. Ok, so SE doesn't put 850 on their phones. Fair enough. That is easily their own fault. Now whether they are satisfied with it, and their reasons for that, are their own business.

But we have to agree on something else. The american market is very different than the rest of the world. Number one is the differing technologies and frequencies, which requires extra investments on behalf of the manufaturer (something that is a greater problem for SE than it is for Samsung and Nokia). Number two, the market situation is different. I don't have the most curent stats, but as of recently 95% of the people in the USA buy their phones from the carrier. So that means that SE needs to market their phones to the carriers directly, rather than the customers. Well, needless to say that is a lot harder.

By the way, I would like to turn everybody's attention to the fact that no carrier is offering any high end Nokias. The only exception might be the N75, which I personally consider mid-range, and that's also barely selling.

Samsung is not selling any of their high-end phones in the US either. Only LG is about to come out with an american version of the Prada, but then again comparing SE to LG is the last thing I would want to do. Motorola, on the other hand doesn't even have models that could be considered high-end. So they're not even a comparison.

So, in the end. The situation is much more complex than SE not caring about the US market.

Now, I know for a fact that AT&T is very close to releasing the K850 in the US, but I'm not fooling myself. It's going to be expensive even with contract and americans are simply not going to buy it.
