so, just so that I understand.... if I buy the iPhone from Apple (without an O2 contract) - take it home, put my current O2 sim in it - do I still have to activate it via iTunes??

Will iTunes still force me to activate it with a current O2 sim installed?

If so - what if I buy a 2nd hand iPhone that has already been activated via iTunes with an O2 contract, and then use my own O2 sim - surely that must work??

I'm relucatnt to unlock\jailbreak it as I'm currently with O2 and have heard that if iTunes updates my unlocked\jailbroken phone, it can still make it a brick.

Buying a 2nd one off ebay seems ideal if I can just pop my current O2 sim in and use it without any modifications...

Has anyone tried another O2 sim in the iPhone yet??

there a links on the hacko thread, u download the 1.1.1 files directly from the apple.com website.

if you dont want to mod an iphone to use any o2 sim you have to activate it by using a o2 iphone contract i.e £35 * 18 but you dont have a hassle of waiting for someone to crack the next firmware.

the only way to uses any o2 sim i.e contract or pay and go is to jailbreak it. still works but you wont beable to upgrade firmware until someone jail breaks.

if i didnt have 8 month left on my orange contract i would prob of just activated it using a iphone contract but thats not the case.

Here are the direct links to all the apple firmware files for the iPhone

DO NOT DECOMPRESS OR UNARCHIVE THE FILE, AND DO NOT LET YOUR BROWSER DO IT EITHER.

Version 1.1.1

http://appldnld.apple.com.edg[....]e1,1_1.1.1_3A109a_Restore.ipsw

Version 1.0.2

http://appldnld.apple.com.edg[....]one1,1_1.0.2_1C28_Restore.ipsw

Cheers

David

I think that might have happened, when i open the file there is one Firmware folder and 5 other files, is that how its ment to be or is that decompresed?

That means it's decompressed, you cannot use Safari, you have to use another browser such as Firefox as they will not decompress it.

Or just tell safari "in preferences" to not open files after downloading.
