Well,I like to keep mine at 20 procents light at nite. I am always look at it to see the time and it eats only 2 procents per night.

Why the long debate over a minor Alarm thing. I dont see the point of switching off the P1i. Just set it to "offline" or something. If you are too lazy to do that then get one of those auto profile switching app to do it for you.
If I'm not too lazy to switch the phone off, why would I be too lazy to switch it offline? How does lazyness come into it? I have never left a phone on 24/7 before - I have NO need to do that. I always switch off at bedtime, except now with the P1i if it needs charging. I understand the point of flight mode if I'm on an aeroplane or hospital etc but other than that it's a pointless feature to me. If I want the phone to not accept calls I will just switch the damned thing off. Nope, nobody has yet managed to convince me that needing to have the P1i switched on in order to use the alarm is a good thing.

(This has the chance to become one of those long-running threads . . .)
It would be hard to argue that this is a "good thing". It's just the way it is. If you feel that this will turn out to be one of those things you can't get used to, then better sell your P1i and buy another phone. If you need a smartphone then steer clear of Windows Mobile devices as these behave in exactly the same way, and just pick up a Nokia S60 phone.

so if SE renamed "flight mode" to "phone off" mode you'd be happy?

Flight mode is a separate thing to switching the phone off, so if SE renamed it they would be lying.
I can - and do - live with the P1i. I'm just stating that this alarm IS a pain as far as I'm concerned. Not a deal-breaker of course and I've had many happy months with my P1i already.

I also don't know why the screen has to illuminate the room whilst the battery is charging, that's another mild annoyance. Again on a S40 Nokia I can charge the phone whilst it is switched OFF. The screen is NOT illuminated. I find both these issues an irritation to be honest and nobody can prove to me how they are somehow 'better'.
Huh? The screen stays on when charging? Is this when the phone is OFF or ON? I charge my phone while it's on and the screen goes off after a minute and stays off during charging except for the bottom charging light.
What I don't get is why the charging station light stays on with or without a phone connected...

In case you don't like it, I told you what to do. One less concern!

@mib1800: it's not that, it's the principle. And I understand it. I don't care about it but I get it. People want that. They want S40 or S60, 3rd edition. Why not buying a Nokia, then?

Also, that's possible on Symbian UIQ phones. Just set your backlight in "Device" to "power Save" after a minute and "Handheld' to "auto" and there you go-your screen will go off while idling even when charging.
I already have those settings enabled but my screen still stays permanently illuminated whilst charging.

It's stunning that people are still talking about this.
Mind boggling.
