It really doesn't matter how 'well' you look after it, thats a really poor excuse. It's a case of at that age, it's something you really REALLY don't need, you just want because it's 'cool'. So what if you know how to use it all, it's still wrong. Getting a contract at 14 is even worse.

Kid's will be being bought there first cars at 12 next....

i had contract when i was 12..... i gave it to my dad and had prepay instead as the reception was crap. but it was cheap had to pay only 250 pesos($5) a month. and i know my limits......

Just had a brief run down of the thread, personally, while my parents may have bought me the necessary items when i was growing up e.g. food, drinks, provided me with clothes etc... anything that was a luxuary came out of my pocket.

In any case i agree with the likes of Miss UK, Seanyb2, Daedalus95, kids today are getting phones (not only phones, but a number of other items) bought by their parents which no doubt are spoiling them.

I teach, and one of my students only 6 months ago got a Motorola v3 (not the newest phone retailed at 30-50 pound at the time), however she is not even 11 yet. Just the other week, she tells me her dad will buy her a new phone because the v3 is crap.
Now while the phone may very well be crap i cant see how that is justification for the dad to buy her a new phone considering a) she doesn;t work b) the v3 still works c) she isn't even 11 d) what in the world will she be doing with it?!

Anyways, the last few posts on this thread about getting a contract from your parents or getting your parents to buy the phone because you have researched it and made sure you know how to use the phone have not understood the point of the thread.

My take is not that kids today don't know how to use phones, i understand the OP was shocked at how spoilt kids are walking around with 100, 150 and ever 200+ pound phones.
I understand a mother wants to know where her kids are, that is fine, so why can't a £40 phone do?

Now before anyone answers saying that £40 won't do because the phone will be crap, remember the mother will buy the phone so she knows where her kids are, the phone doesn't need to be cool, it just needs to work and last time i checked my 3510 works. It may not be a cool phone but it recieves a call and sends a message and imo, until the age of 14 at least kids dont need anything else from their phones, and personally should they have one at all?!? well that is debatable, funny thing is if a mother is worried about their 10 yr old and where they will be surely that says something about the mother no keeping control of their children?

Anyways rich parents may spoil there kids cos they have the money fine by me, but i still think it is wrong, sure buy them a gift, buy them a toy but dont make it a weekly occurance.

from a parent's point of view it is essential that we choose a careful route thu all the "i wants", "i'm the only one in my school who doesn't have a..." routines! it's tougher than ever for parents cos the demands on us are so high and generally we have more than my parents did when i was a kid... so we r setting a pretty high standard of luxury living examples!

did succumb to a phone for my eldest (13y). her school is 20km away and it is a bit tricky if she misses the bus home! so i put £10 per YEAR and said that it should cover the cost of emergency calls. what's so cool is that she sees it as her life line, keeps the phone safe and only uses it when she's in a fix!

why is everyone acting like only adults should have good phones. what if the kid has a n95 8gb or whatevr but what if thats the only expensive thing he owns. i have a k850 on contract and im 16, but my dad made me prommiss i will get good grades in school. and now he has told me he will get a ps3 becuase i have good grades on my report. im not spoilt and i dont have many luxuries exept the phone and a decent pc in my room.

Although I will agree they are spoilt, what you have to remember is, this is a diffrent era.

All these gadgets are now available, when before they did not exist. Im sure, if we had all of those things, 20 years ago, we would likely to have been spoiled with all the gadgets.

Now they are so widely available and easy to get, kids take stuff for granted. In my opinion, I only see the point in a kid having a phone is when they go to high school.

Are they spoilt? IMO yes they are, but its because of the era we live in, and the way it is all advertised as an essential thing that every body needs.

Well, I do consider myself a bit more mature than children, but I still say they're spoilt. Where I live, even 8-year-olds have phones now!
However, the worst part is when they're trying to "look cool" by playing 3-month-old hits/cheesy idiotic rap through the loudspeakers of their phones, adding even more unnecessary noise to their retarded gaggle, provoking you to just go to the back of the bus/to the street and "give them a piece of your mind".
Oh, and I also get annoyed when they try to look smart in front of their friends and talk about techie stuff they've no idea about.
My first phone was the K500i. It only had pretty basic MP3 capabilities (and the amazing ability to store up to 3 songs) and a VGA camera. Totally suited my needs back then. My present phone (K810i) was again a present from my parents because I had promised to work at our family hotel all summer long (and so I did - also learned to make a few cocktails ).
I'm going to buy my next phone with the money I won from a scholarship last year (plus a bit financial backing from my parents, because I'm going to give my K810 to me dad). Note that I'm also an excellent student at school.
I dare say I'm not spoilt.

I think they are, I'm disgusted that people my age are given cars. I know one guy, given a new mini one, he writ it off but got another one given to him.

I believe people should work for what they want, not be given it, makes me sick

Yeah I stopped bussing last year when I got my first car, and yesterday I had to take the bus with my girlfriend and our brothers because I only have a restricted license (and am the only one who can drive). It was the first time I ever experienced someone with their phone turned up loud on the bus. He was this piss-head listening to his crappy '90s metal music and he just sat there with it turned on despite everyone's "are you f*cking serious?" glares. I can't believe anyone could have the nerve to sit there disrupting everyone's peace, when headphones cost only a few $$$!
