its been a while since I was on vodafone but its possible your contract apn is set to pp.vodafone.co.uk in order to access vodafone live
If I was you I would create a new data account with the APN set to internet
no username/password is required but I believe you can enter web/web for these if you want
set that as the default data account and try again

I've never created an account like this from scratch so I'm a bit confused!
I've gone in to create a "Data" account and it has the following fields: Account Name, Address, User Name, Password.
I've stuck in "internet" in the Account Name and left all the other settings blank. I then added the account to a new group. When I try to connect with coreplayer using the new group. The little www symbol pops up for a second and disappears.
Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

Account name is just your name for the account, address is the equivalent field for APN so thats where you should put the value internet

The new account seems to connect OK but CorePlayer still doesn't work. Back to the CP forum!!

oh well.. worth a try, but that really does suggest its not a data account or proxy problem so is probably helpful in some way

Absolutely - I did ensure I tried the connection through Opera as well and that worked fine. Very strange that CorePlayer seems not to work through a a data connection - hopefully they'll suss it out soon...
