I never have such issues with my pc's as I only load known software, I have to as I rely on it as a work machine too
on the other hand, my mrs and kids always have issues as they try all sorts of "free" software and also visit all sorts of weird sites
maybe the mac protects against even those things?
never heard of hackintosh! but glad I have finally tried a mac since I've been threatening too since the mac mini came out

If it's not been answered already;
Click the apple logo, top left and about this mac then more info, this gives you all the specs.
cmd+shift+4 gives a cross hair, click and drag to take pic of an area, will get saved as a png on the desktop.
cmd+shift+3 takes a pic of the whole screen and again saves as a png to the desktop.

But that's the thing, you don't need SW on a mac, buy a printer, plug it in, buy a camera, plug it in, buy a scanner, plug it in, no driver CDs needed

thanks haynesycop
@fatreg, really? how does MAC know all the intricate and device specific functionality that the attached device supports, and how to handle it, and how ot present it in settings menus etc? sorry, just puzzled given that every device has unique characteristics

By magic Big M! you're a clever chap, you know these things share a certain amount of things, specifics are stored in your mac, if you hunt around the library you'll see folders and folders of makes or printers etc etc that have never been anywhere near your mac...

ah ok, the same happens in Windows... it knows about many existing products and can provide basic functionality for most, but device specific functionality needs drivers
for windows, vendors provide basic details to MS so that their device has some basic default connectivity... surely this is the same in mac?
and surely mac, like windows, can't handle new devices previously unknown, or provide device specific functionality without extra software? as a developer I just can't see how it can do "magic" without prior knowledge, i.e. programming based on info provided by vendors as each device will have its own protocols for communication etc
anyway, I have to say I'm not that impressed by the Stanford University lectures so far. Considering the lecturers are long time Apple employees working in the iPhone development arena for Apple, there's alot of umm-ing and ah-ing, the first demo didn't work, and their techniques for explaining things leave alot to be desired. However, its great that its been downloadable on iTunes so that I can play it over and over while googling similar references to put it all together
I've now completed the first course assignment, which was text based rather than GUI, so I'm looking forward to getting some serious iPhone assignments done! This is FUN!

ok, so how do you add stuff to the menu bar at the bottom?
I tried dragging a program there and it went up in a puff of smoke never to be seen again. I checked the wastebasket but it wasn't there.
I'm now having to install the sdk again since it was the xcode program from that!
what did I do wrong?
edit: oh, and I lost the downloaded folder that was there in the menu bar too... how to get that back?

When you open an app it'll appear in the dock (bottom bar) right click and "Keep in dock"
as for downloads drag and drop from your home folder to the dock a la

ah, ok. I was trying to drag the app from the folder to the dock, and also trying to find an option on the program in the folder (like move to trash) which would allow me to add it to the dock
strange that you have to actually open the app in order to get the option to add it to the dock but it works... so thanks
