There is now a new page for Nokia N900 Applications. these applications should also be compatible with other Maemo 5 devices. Right now there are a few applications which you might be interested in. It will be updated very shortly with many more. So keep a watch on the page.

I wish I was one of the other esato member with this phone but unfortunately, the N900 has been held back for a few more weeks in Sweden. I may not even get it before January which is too late for me.
The Xperia X10 is just around the corner when the Swedes get to see it in stores.

I'm very tempted by this even though I know I shouldn't jump out and grab it when it's currently pricey and possibly immature. I really didn't like the feel of the N97 keyboard, is the N900 any better?

I never tried a n97 so I can't compare. According to tests, some people prefer n97 keyboard with its d-pad and more space, while others prefer n900 keyboard with bigger keys and better feedback.
As a "long-time" touchscreen keyboard user (htc diamond, iphone), I consider the n900 one a major improvement. I would say I type as easily as on the P1i (and I typed fast), and it's much more comfortable and I love the keyboard shortcuts.
Moreover, even if maemo 5 is called "immature", in my experience it is rock stable and really close to desktop experience. I enjoy using the n900 more and more. I don't feel the need of more applications as everything can be done as you'd do on your computer. the only critic is about the GPS software which sucks, but the GPS lock is faster than on my iphone 3G, and sygic will provide a navigation software.
Photo quality, audio output, divx playback, exceptional browsing capabilities, overall speed and performance associated with 32Go memory make this "phone" a good friend for us geeks
if you are a developer it's even better with the maemo community taking advantage of the open source OS.

Thanks for the comments, that is a very valid point that having a physical keyboard is a step up from a touchscreen keyboard anyway - I'm finding the lack of physical keyboard is extremely irritating on the 5800. Unfortunately I missed the preorder Nokia deal on the N900, Handtec have the N900 for 435 pounds plus delivery on preorder which seems not bad, are there any current good deals?

I had mine on Nokia France (azerty keyboard) preordered during a 20% reduction week in november, so I payed it 550€ instead of 650€.
Here it will be available this week on contracts (orange, sfr, bouygues) for around 250€, exclusively in "thephonehouse" shops.
