Hope no-one minds me opening an old thread up, but I am after some cell info for Mini GPS. I've got some from my locality (see below, and will post more as I get them too!), could other people post their cell info, location, and network too? Either that, or PM me with some codes to stick into my phone.

btw, is there a website somewhere that has these codes at all? There's a link to a site on this thread, but all it shows is a local map, with no transmitters or codes on it

Thanks!

Earlier in this thread someone mentioned that the ID they were getting on their phone was different to the one on the sitefinder website. According to this article they bare no relationship to each other!
http://www.powerwatch.org.uk/news/news506ra.htm

"they change the index field numbers every three months when they update the information."

Just found this, and thought you might be interested. So unfortunately the info isn't much use with minigps

Has anyone found a more accurate / useful database?

i had a quick read of that article - does this mean that they keep changing the cell IDs, or that the information that the Sitefinders site has is just wrong?

I can now see the base stations on it, you have to go down to the maximum magnification (1:100) and then scroll about to find base stations - except I've so far not found the two nearest to where I live which I've already 'harvested', sounds like their info could well be wrong!

We have created a database at https://www.world-tracker.com/cellid - feel free to add Cell IDs!

The Sitefinder website is known to contain inaccuracies. It is only updated every 3 months, and only when a base station is integrated into the national system. Each operator at each site is allocated a cell ID.

When we approached Sitefinder about how to keep a history on base stations (for example for use in a signal strength site-survey), they admitted that at each three month update the cell IDs could be changed, and therefore no site is given a unique cell ID and cannot necessarily be tracked.

As a result there would be no real point in creating a cell ID database as you would have to look up every base station and re-allocate cell IDs every three months.

SiteFinder have recently updated the cell IDs (September 2004), and it is worth checking to see if any of the cell IDs that you hold on your database have changed.

I checked some of the 02 cells around me (N London) and the ID codes are definitely different on the Sitefinder site to the ones I've got.

Does the statement above about IDs that change every 3 months apply to the cell IDs that MiniGPS picks up, or is it talking about the arbitrary IDs on Sitefinder?

I suspect the best way to go would be to try to get a definitive list from each network provider. They must have a database of the information we need. It's just a case of convincing them to release a copy.

Sitefinder have informed us that their variable arbitrary IDs have now been replaced with operator IDs as supplied by the phone operators. As such, the cell IDs on the MiniGPS software should now match the Sitefinder cell ID references. If they STILL do not match please let me know and we will contact the necessary people to find out why this would still be the case.

What is the interest in knowing what a cell id is? What can that information be used for?
