Anyone have any idea about my internet-memory stick problem? (please see above posts for b/ground info!)

After careful consideration of all the available facts and a thorough examination of the problem from all angles I ahve come up with the following theory; you appear to have a problem with your internet settings and your memory stick.
Sorry I'm just joshing! My advice is to format both the phone and the meory stick. Wipe both of them clean and start afresh. It puzzles me why the memory stick should be interferring with your internet connections. Opera installes on the c:\ drive unless I'm mistaken so it isn't even as if it is on the memory stick.
Out of interest is the problem confined to Opera, or have you been having problems accessing e-mail as well?

Well...I think your advice is a sound one...

Damn! I'm really at a loathe to do this however...I've already filled up my memory card with lots of stuff, backing up and restoring everything will probably take me ages...sigh

This seems to affect all my internet settings, for some reason, not just Opera. Sorry, but I didn't mention yesterday (because I thought it was something to do with Voda!) that I DID have some problems accessing internet even with the built-in browser RECENTLY (ever since I stuck my 128mb card in!).

The whole discussion above (when I mentioned that I COULD access the internet) was based on my past usage when I was still on the 32mb card, and even back then I couldn't use Opera. Since then, I have reinstalled Opera, and so that's probably why it works now when I stick the 32mb card in.

My recent problems with accessing the internet are a whole different thing now! And it still puzzles me as to why I can only access the internet with my 32mb card inserted...I'm trying to understand what the problem is, it seems to point to the 128mb card and yet if I remove all memory cards it still doesn't seem to want to access the internet; must be some sort of corrupted settings somewhere along the line!

I know its really inconvenient, but it would seem a good solution to a very annoying problem.

Yup yup, guess it can't be helped!

I've noticed quite a few people who are quite technically informed about this phone and its technology...anyone who has any idea why this is happening though? This is more of a matter of curiousity...

Opera is a weird one sometimes. I have it installed on my c drive. But one day, for no obvious reason, opera decided to splatter a bunch of files all over my d drive. Consequently, it stopped working. So i reinstalled it and it still wouldnt work. Only after removing these files on d drive and re reinstalling did it start working again. My guess is that opera has installed itself partly on your 32mb duo. Remove your memory card and reinstall opera on c. Then look through your d drive for any web, bookmark, cache or opera files and delete them.

But this doesn't apply to just Opera now...it's generally any form of internet access!

MMS-ing seems to work though - it connects through GPRS and I receive the message that it gets delivered. The recipient doesn't seem to receive it though, but since I normally send it overseas I think this boils down to the network provider over there...

An update to the status of my phone! Formatting the external drive and then doing a master reset on the phone seems to have done the job. All my settings now work! Must've just been something corrupted in there, along the way.

And after a long a painful restoring process, everything seems to be fine and dandy now. There were some errors during the restore process, but I just clicked on 'try again' and things seem to move on...and at the moment I haven't found any problems. Thank you to those who have helped me sort this out!

On O2, Opera is quite happy to access the internet via O2's MobileWeb...

On Voda, however, Opera doesn't want to do it again...but I think this is because I've got the WAP GPRS settings for Voda and not the Mobileweb settings (for a lack of a better way to describe it!)...gonna hunt for those settings now so that I don't have to keep swapping over to an O2 card if I want to use Opera!

An observation...it seems the memory card DID have some influence on my internet settings! When I initially formatted the card, it seems that the internet settings worked fine after that...although just to be on the safe side I did a master reset anyway and restored all my data...hrmm...

I was just reading a recent thread (which was revived) and ScotsBoysUK mentioned this thread which I started months back.

I then remembered that we had a discussion about how Opera drains battery power. We never did really come to any conclusion!

I recently did an experiment, as I was away for the last week at a conference and had no other facility to access the internet except my P900 (I could've paid £1 for 15 mins' surfing at a local shop though, no thank you! Plenty of free minutes for me to surf with on my phone), and have a rough indication of how Opera performs. Figured it might be of interest to someone in this forum!

I connected via GSM, and with constant surfing (ie no idle time, I was accessing multiple pages - 3-4 Opera browsers open at any one time and at least 2-3 of them downloading stuff at any one time - I'm an impatient surfer, which doesn't help a 9.6kbps connection!).

Results - I noticed that the battery level went down 1% for roughly every 5 minutes of surfing which I did.

One other effect which kinda spoils these results though, is that I started with 73% battery power, and after surfing for 70+ minutes, the battery indication had it go down to around 50+%, but I think this was a direct drain on the battery because as soon as I switched my connection off and left the phone idle for a couple of minutes, the battery indication went up to 70%!

Hopefully this gives a rough indication of how much power Opera eats up - which isn't very much, to be honest! Viva la Opera en Oggplay! :D
