What you don't see on the market are phones that have a special feature set targeted to specific needs.

Let me give an example: you can not find a phone that is basic in features, just the talking and the sms, and that is tri-band or even quad band and extra-long lasting battery. This phone would be perfect for international travellers. Put in a charger with the different kinds of plugs. Make an 'off-street' version which is sturdy and weatherproof or even waterproof and that is sold mainly in the adventure-travel stores. Make an '5th avenue' version which is brilliant in design and sell it only at Louis Vuiton or something.

Cellphone design seems to be stuck in a rather linear vision on developing phones. Only Nokia has tried to break this barrier.

Anyway now you can not choose a phone that has the features you want without paying for other features you don't want. And with paying I do not mean money alone, also in having to work through menu's and shorter battery life etc.

Maybe it is doesn't make much financial sense to make a niche phone although in my opinion they should do..

What do u understand with nice fone? Think if u get used to a form, hard to accept a new one. The t68m was a way new design, but its still an ///, thats what i call knowledge, to present something new but at the same time the tradition dont get lost. This message was posted from a T630

'Nice' is when form and function come together in close harmony. Then you have timeless design because the object is complete, it soes not 'long' to be something else. Then you do not need tricks to compensate for bad design solutions, like the auto-lock of keys in a candy-bar phone.
Good examples: the flip-phones, the p800 but only without the flip, the early (mostly Motorola) clamshells without outer screen.
Just my idea.

@boba. Sorry that wasn't a typo. I meant 'niche' meaning a phone made a partucular or special market.

For instance, one company is producing a handset now, specifically 'without' camera, for use in workplaces, because they are worried about people being able to take pictures of sensitive information.

That is a 'niche' phone. In other words it would have to be something special for a company to produce and market a handset designed for a particular use..
