The usual mass 'hysteria' over any new suggestion, once again rears its head. I don't think this suggestion was intended as a challenge to the current system, more as a measure to add something positive to it.

Thankyou Scots mate...Words of wisdom in a sea of hysteria!

I don't think it's a great idea. @scotty, I can't see what it would add to be honest. It seems to me that laffen has actually done an exceptionally good job in choosing moderators who act responsibly, impartially and sensibly - indeed considerably more so than the rest of the membership in most cases.
I think allowing a voting system for contentious issues actually has more chance of allowing the lunatics to take over the asylum than achieving anything positive. There are a handful of people who I would be personally be happy to see making decisions as to what is valid, and if they have such an interest they should become moderators but for the most part I think the status quo works just fine and any amendments giving more "power to the people" would be a seriously bad move. This is mainly a reflection on the fact that I think that you would find, after a while, that you would be left with no decent mods and only those with an axe to grind would actually bother voting.
Just my two cents, which thankfully carries no weight....at the moment anyway

I certainly CONCUR with the MAJORITY's replies on this ISSUE - unanimously ! If VOTING will be DONE everytime there will be a fragile ISSUE, then I guess there will be NO need for Mods anymore
Though however, there are CERTAIN ISSUES that the VOTES of the individual members here would be CERTAINLY be - NEEDED! Like . . .
1. Whether a CERTAIN member be BANNED for LIFE !
2. Whether a certain MEMBER be 'catapulted' to a Moderator Status.
3. Whether a certain MEMBER be allowed to change his USERNAME . . .
4. Whether MODS + Laffen be allowed to GO on a VACATION
!

Thoe are precisely the issues members should not have a say in.

I think that is a blow below the belt in this case. I am the first to agree that esato is partial to a fair bit of 'mobbing' and 'mass hysteria' however I don't see any of that in this thread.
And contrary to you, I do think voicing an suggestion to change the 'line of command' (if you will) of the board at the very least suggests a challenge to the current system.
It's either one or the other: EITHER we have mods and admin who decide what's best for us, OR we all speak our minds on every issue and never reach an agreement. I wonder if we'd learn to compromise along the way?
And supporting something because 'it will never be a reality but I just desperately need to hear the sound of my own voice' doesn't stick as a massively impressive argument, don't you agree?
