Is there much performance difference between a single channel memory and a dual channel one?

Dual-Channel RAM technology has been implemented and developed in the interest of addressing a lack of bandwidth for memory communication with the CPU. On motherboards where the FSB is or might not be sufficient for single-channel RAM configurations, Dual-Channel is often included to increase the efficiency of the system.

It depends on what you're doing. the performance increase can be anywhere between 5% for 'standard' computing tasks to 70% for memory intensive tasks. Hewlet Packard came up with these benchmarks, where the percentage values are the relative increase in performance of dual channel over single channel:

SYSMark 7.0%
Winstone (Content Creation) 6.9%
Winstone (Business) 9.2%
Mad Onion 3D 22.0%
Stream 33.0% - 70.0%
Sandra (Integer and Floating Point) 61%
ViewPerf 9%

Is there a specific reason why the AMD-64 754 pin processors do not support dual channel memory? Thats why my query!

I know that! What i'm asking is, will there be a performance drop in the amd 754 processors if compared to a p4 supporting dual channel memory?

Atholon 64 has the memory controller on die, inside the processor, so newer Atholon 64 have a dual channel memory controller. I don't know if its just the newer 939-pin processors or just the higher end ones.

@whizz

There probably will be a noticible difference with memory intensive tasks such as video editing, less so on tasks that make more use of other hardware such as games.

@DJcreamz

Doesn't really matter where you get your memory from, the prices are pretty similar from one supplier to another, particularly online. Dabs are usually fairly reasonable. Just make sure that you get a good quality stick such as Kingston, Crucial etc.
