How I found a solution that worked for me

I had exactly the same problem with my w800i when I tried to upgrade to version R1N035, that is: I would connect my phone with the USB cable to the computer, the upgrade would start normally using the SE website procedure, everything would go fine until 42%, then a slight delay, a jump to 46% and an interruption with a "communication errror" message.

After trying the same process at least several times and always getting exactly the same result (a half-done update), I called Sony Ericsson. The customer service rep had no idea why this would occur. Eventually he suggested that the update source I had downloaded might have been corrupted, so he prompted me to repeat the procedure again the following day after the SE people would take a look at the issue.

Having already spent too much time on the issue, I could not wait that much longer. I went and did some research on the internet. I remember reaching some web page that stressed the importance of having the USB phone cable properly attached to the phone, as it was prone to make poor contact.

I couldn't believe it could be something as simple; besides, the phone looked firmly attached to the cable - you know how the cable locks in it. But in my desperation I had nothing to lose. I repeated the process once more from the beginning using the update that had already been downloaded in my computer. This time I was holding the cable tight against the phone throughout the upgrade.

Believe it or not, this worked for me. The upgrade terminated with a success message, and at the end I was left with my mouth hanging wide open in disbelief at the reason why this whole thing had happened and caused so much frustration and lost time.

No brownie points to Sony Ericsson for not foreseeing the phone-cable poor contact (I assume this was the problem: Out of about 10 failed attempts to upgrade, this change made the difference). However, I give them credit for offering to have their tech support flash the device for me at their facilities as a last resort.

@ biggy7

Go to http://www.sonyericsson.com then click support tab, there you'll see a link to the global support area or click on this link to go directly to global support area

P.S: don't forget to remove the firmware files first from
E:Program FilesSony EricssonUpdate Servicesoftware-data
& let the SEUS download the files again.

@thisisalexk
I tried your method, but STILL can't update fully. My firmware is now set to R1NA005, but the camera driver refuses to update. It's the same old thing: it gets to 47% and then I get the communication error. I tried all four USB ports, but nothing worked.

This sucks. I'm still left with a non-working camera, and when I adjust the volume of the Walkman, instead of a volume bar, I get a blank screen.

I got 16 mates that will agree with what I posted....

Everything is fine on my PC. But one thing that i am curious about is the previous post about the USB cable not being connected properly. Will try that as soon as i get home.

@biggy7

What I did was not to use the UK site in the end.

I deleted what was in
C:\Program Files\Sony Ericsson\Update Service\software-data
and used the global site which downloaded Europe_2 again for me.

Global site is this

Don't know if this was the problem but it worked for me first time. (after 4 days without a fully working phone)
