@Prom No insult taken at all

The reason I chose the BMW M was specifically because of the element of technology and software necessary to make such a machine work. I tried my best to stay on track No pun intended.

I've always enjoyed participating in beta testing, bringing a product around to golden. I think the community involment is great, and why I am in and enjoy the industry. There are just some times when the product seems to come out in an alpha state (the 990) We all waited a long time for SE to clear up the gremlins so we could get the product to a relable point. The wait was too long in relation the the resultant product...in my humble opinion.

Jah's points were valid, just our degrees of what we feel is acceptable differ. And you know....LOL....maybe those years are catching me. I really expected the technology industry to have evolved to faster more reliable product cycles.

I guess for me, it's best summed up by the M600 in my hand, and my want for the future P1000 to be out soon....

@Billdoor13; experience is highly valued amongst fellow SE users and Esato members. You're not that old my friend. I see now how valid your analogy is. I saw a recent video of the P990i on youtube, and it looks like the device is incredibly fast, and stable. Its in French so I have no idea what the host is saying. Now he's just browsing the phone applications, not 3rd party apps power users such as yourself use. I'd consider myself a light to moderate user, even with my brief sting with S60 (6620).

Here is the youtube video I spoke of:

Could somebody with a P990 (and say a K800/750 to film it with) post on Youtube a video review of the phone from wake up right to see memory left after boot and then using say Opera to visit a few pages of our favorite site, and say launching a 3rd party app of their own?

@Billdoor13

Like you I have spent many years in the IT industry (around 17) and I have managed complex IT systems development where the s/w is rock solid. And that comes from taking an engineering approach and involving the end users in incremental testing. I don't know what has happened to the mobile phone industry - I am not happy with SE like others. For me the Ericsson R380 is one of the best examples of good quality - it was nearly perfect when launched.

@Prom1

My point about Linux is that there no Open OS like Symbian or WM5 that many manufacturers can use and developers can produce applications etc.

Having started this thread I would like to state the following.

I am not and have never been a 'P' series basher. In fact I think the previous versions P800 / P900 / P910i were terrific kit and this is reflected in the sales on all networks.

My argument is with the delayed launch of the P990i and all the bull about testing(which obviously could not have ben extensive) we al expected a truly usable handset.

Yes we all know WM5 devices had their problems but I couldn't believe just how poor the 'out the box experience' actually was. Even after the first firmware update the unit was still virtually useless due to bugs, crashes and re-boots.

I fear that most of the bad publicity was down to the 'anticipation' after such a great series of phones.

To those who think I have set out to slate SE just check the 'grade B' stock at expansys compared to other smartphones and this is just 2 months after release.

I yearn for the true successor to the P990i !!!

i dunno about u lot but i recon it was well worth the wait and i also classify my fone veryyy stable i dnt understand what this stability fuss is about? 2months usage and only 2 restarts, sum of you guys need to stop pushing da fone to its limits and then saying its unstable. use it moderately and the fone is stable, also less of da third party apps will keep the p990 stable.

just to add the the fire..

my 990 has been very stable, except for video recording.....but i have had to run video in the background to get the speed up....

it has however been crashing a few times in the last few days.

tonight i bought Swiss Manager Pro, and i have to say, AMAZING!

what a difference...really advise anyone to buy it...the best 18 quid you will spend on your phone for sure.....

its rapid, doesnt crash anymore and the preferences are excellent, to make your phone work like it should..

if your wondering whether to buy this or not, or love the phone but are pissed at the issues, just buy it.

i know i sound like an advertising salesman here LOL, but i want the doubters to enjoy the phone like i am now.....

hope this is usefull to some one..

I'm pretty much sold on the P990I now. I was going to go for the K800I or the M600I but I want a camera for conveniance and a want a smart phone for reminders and lists and tasks so for me it's the P990.
I was worried about the crashing etc so thought I would hang on but now people are starting to say it's working better and is more stable due to software upgrades. And if the only problem is the software then I know SE will fix it.
IMO the SE UIQ interface is much nicer and better fresher looking then windows mobile or Nokia's interfaces.

It was really worth the wait IMO. I dont know about prices and other smart phones but altough I was very happy owner of P910 I must admit that it is not comparable to P990, that much better P990 is. We all know about advanced features, cammera, wifi etc, but even some common things are uncomparanle. For e.g. I was not able to open 1MB word file in 910, and portrait editing specialy excel files was not so easy. Last night I edited 1.25MB word file without any problem while listening music. Next P series will be better without doubt and that is the name of the game but for now all I can say is that P990 is absolutely fantastic smart phone and it was worth every second of waiting:)

What is the point of a "top of the line" smartphone if it cant run 3rd party apps reliably? There are tons of fantastic - and cheaper - normal camera phones out there for those who dont need 3rd part app.

That cant be an excuse. Maybe its just firmware - but if so then Sony Ericsson needs to get off their butt and serve the customers better. There is no worse stupidity in business than to take for granted the very customers who are willing to pay you the most.

From what I read it seems the firmware is getting there, though not fully yet. But for a flagship phone that is just not good enough.

I am thinking about getting an upgrade from my M600i right now and what is unfortunate is that my thinking has been reduced to at most getting a used P990i as a bridge to the N95. In customer retention terms, this is a disaster for SE of other people are basically writing this thing off.

If you are not a Nokia, SE, etc, etc 'fanboy', then you have the advantage to chose from anything out there. Yes N95 is brilliant but if you want a PDA, P990i style, then you should have a look at WM5 OS in general and TyTN in particular. I do prefer symbian (s60 in particular) but then again I ain't a 'fanboy' :D
