> P990i- plastic or metal

@Johnex:
I was kidding about the new material thing. Finding such a material would probably give you the Nobel prize...
It is, however, VERY strange that it's more conductive on the worn part. I'm not blaming you or anything, but since it kinda defies the laws of physics, I guess it might be a false measurement...
EDIT: oh, I forgot I also took my flip off and checked the plastic underneath it (which can be seen in Nanu's picture). That is (hold your breath) NOT conductive.

OK, iv'e got to join in with this now, you could ALL be correct;
I read a while back that phone manufacturers were looking for a material which was both mouldable & durable, the material they decided on was "Amorphous Metal" it can appear to look like plastic, it is an alloy, "Plastic" is actually just a word to decribe something with plasticity;
The word plastic is derived from the fact that it is malleable, having the property of plasticity
(wikipedia)
NOTE, i have no idea if the P990 casing is amorphous metal or not, but i DID read it is used for some mobile phone casings, whatever material P990 is constructed from, the outer finish is indeed an applied coating, desighned to give the impression of metal as we know it, these metalic coatings often do contain metals,
finally, for a member to suggest "stainless steel" is incorporated as part of the casing is not entirely incorrect as stainless steel is just an alloy & tiny amounts of non corrosive metal will indeed be incorporated into the metalic paint used arround the screen.
this may help;

@pachy:
Heh, cool. That could actually be the case. However, the photo I found in an article (linked from the Wikipedia article about such metals) looked quite much like lead, not the brown plastic Johnex's phone is showing...

yeah, the whole brown plastic is weird. . . its got a sandy feel, almost like its got small airbubbles on the surface, and the paint was sprayed on it, leaving some residue.

Well, here is a plastic one on Amazon;
http://216.239.59.104/search?[....]+from&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=3&gl=uk
At £200 GBP inc free shipping for unlocked handset its not a bad deal, however, i would rather spend the extra & go for the standard allbeit more expensive all metal version .........
(also i think mine is magnetic as women tend to move closer when i am out & about, although this has also happened on the odd ocaision that i havnt had the phone on me)

56 replies and I'm even more confused! I didn't think the query was going to be this tricky.

A good test for any component of unknown composition is the Plastic V metal lips test, simply gently put the any parts to your lips a plastic part will feel warm metal will feel cold it is all to do with the way plastics and metals conduct heat and it works every time.
I have also spoken to a service engineer and he tells me in all the units he has seen the "screen bezel is a plastic base moulding with a thin layer of "metallic" material bonded to it"
Hope this helps
