Simply bacause something has been done before, doesn't make it a bad thing IMHO. I think there should be multiple routes to achieving the same goal in terms of user input, this way the same interface can suit a wide variety of people's preferences. This is what I thought was the P sieries' greatest streangth - sadly in demise.
There also used to be a very intuitive quality when it came to using say, the p910 - that has been lacking in subsequent devices.
Perhaps if I keep saying "P910", someone at SE might take notice!

I loved the flip on the P990.
For simple browsing an app on the phone (looking up contact, file etc) it was superb. A few taps or nudges on the dpad and rocker keys got me there quickly, with a minimum of hand movement.
For deeper interaction with the device (inputting data etc) the TS is the obvious choice.
Describing the simplicity of use of the Dpad is cumbersome. It's something best understood if one has used such a device.
We humans are still tactile animals. Poking at things with our fingers is as old as time, and we're very sensitive to how our hands move around in space, especially when manipulating items.
So when the device you're is using sits in the palm of your hand, and your entire manual interaction with it covers the space of say 10x5cm, and you're handling it for a reasonable amount of time every day, every millimetre of that spatial real estate counts.
Ergonomically unsatisfactory repetitive movements quickly make themselves felt.
(So yes, I'm in favour of the Dpad and the 5 way jog dial, myself

)

@aqualung
You're right.
Also because of the repetitive usage pattern every day and hours spent on a device, I'm unable to use any other theme as Default. In the end it's always the best. Also because of colour scheme. And the ones I liked, were so imperfect & lacking things.
Sorry for OT.

Examples...ok, how easy is it on P1 etc to access system Status then??
P990FC = (Lock switch)MORE, STATUS
Same goes(personally) for CONNECTIONS(I use BT as much, if not more than WLAN), and ACCEPT CALLS...when I tested P1, back in august, it required me, TOO often, to have to use the stylus, which makes a supposed simple task like these mentioned, into a time consuming one(unlock phone, get stylus, do task, replace stylus, etc..)......
If you wonder why I keep quoting Lock switch, my phone is locked 99% of the time(well, wouldn't yours be if you had a sprung lock switch(and I've loved them since my S700)??)...which is where the advantageous active cam lens cover comes in...but that's going OT......
Excellent point! THAT'S what I'm taking about, even on the S700 spring tab bit

IMO, if they want to maintain a candybar form factor for future flagships, they should at least separate the UI into touch-screen and non-touchscreen and this perhaps, is a challenge. I think it would be more attractive if we're able to choose when we want to use the touchscreen rather than be forced to use it for certain functions only. I can't see why I can't use the hardkeys and jogdial throughout the process of switching networks right up to the end where I'm being forced to use the touchscreen just to click 'done'.

I think we can all agree that the flip was/will be (hopefully) a good thing that makes the P phones stand out in the crowd. I'd be interested in the view's of you all as to wether the qwerty should be on the main body or the underside of the flip.
My preference is for the latter, as it allows for a larger screen, as well as giving the user the option of removing it all together. This allows for the phone-pda/pda-phone decision to be in the hands of the owner, rather than SE.

I would be happy with the current design, I mean both qwerty and normal keyb.
However, this is probably not going to happen anymore.
In my case, I need absolutely an qwerty input created somehow.
This is the basic feature in a smartphone.
I'd be also happy with a good, convenient TouchScreen system.

Me Nah care!
I LOVE the FLIP - lets NOT get Clamshell Motorola V60/RAZR/RAZR2 style confused with FLIP!
I LOVED my T18z & T-39m!
If I could buy any of these today ~ knowing their not counterfit/fraud models I'd rock either for a full month without regret!
FLip in its day allowed for less muffled voice during calls from the owners end due to loud environments. Now with technologies like Motorola's Crystal Talk & codecs like AMR-FR we don't need it. But I'd still like to have a stylish flip on my candy bar.

Well, it seems like SE won't give up on the flips themselves, ably demonstrated by the
W350's announcement......
And I can't get over this comment in it's thread
here, by
jmcomms(no less):
'we could see a move back towards flip phones for the 'retro' factor. Flip phones were very, VERY, popular in their day so why hasn't anyone tried to return to the form factor?'
Even though I'd rather not see everyone with flip phones again, as with all styles, they still have their place in non-smartphones...so why drop them from UIQ devices, on which they are infinitely more useful??

So I guess I'm the only one who prefered the 910's placing of the qwerty keyboard then?

The placement of the keyboard on the P910 was not very practical in terms of use. The P990 has it right.
